How the media saw it....

Concord's high hopes dented by Hullbridge

essex senior: Concord Rangers suffered another blow to their ambitions of winning the Essex Senior League title when they were held to a 1-1 draw at Hullbridge Sports on Saturday.

The Canvey side have worryingly gone off the boil just at a time when they need to find their best form.

The league has always been their major ambition as they crave a place at Ryman League level, but they are also involved in three major knockout dates during the next few weeks.

Next Saturday should be comfortable enough as they hold a big first leg lead over Southend Manor, who they visit in the League Cup quarter-finals.

On Wednesday week they host Southend United, bidding for an Essex Senior Cup semi-final spot.

But, most importantly, on Saturday January 19 they entertain Shawbury United, hoping to make the last 16 of the FA Vase.

On Saturday they were given a real battle by an understrength Hullbridge team who fought hard to get the Lower Road surface fit for action.

Ex-East Thurrock man John Turnbull gave the visitors a 37th-minute lead, but Hullbridge hit back with Dan Barrington hitting the bar and Lewis Manor having an effort turned over by visiting keeper Rob Small.

And it came as no surprise when Gary Paterson ended a fine three-man move by levelling on 69 minutes.

Concord are now 11 points in arrears, with a game in hand, of top dogs Enfield 1893, who saw the league's top scorer Sherwin Stanley chalk up his 25th strike of the season with the only goal of the game at Burnham.

Match report.... grin

After a narrow and undeserved defeat to third placed Burnham

Ramblers, another depleted Hullbridge side were ready for a potential

massacre against a Concord side boasting full strength. We were impressed

by the determination of our chairman who's son Gary Ogilvie plays for the

thames road club and the Concord mob to get the game played after two

pitch inspections(at 10 and 12.30) declared the game

off.Players,supporters,groundsman,chairman,secretary from Concord worked

tirelessly to make the Lower road pitch playable and a pitch inspection at

2 o'clock gave the green light for Flying Rangers to play

Hullbridge. After a peep team talk from our secretary Beryl

and a" Let's rock and roll attitude"from the Hullbridge management the

game started...As usual the Concord globetrotters started at high tempo

trying to kill the game off in the first 20 minutes but were surprised to

find a Bridge side that were determined to give them a run for their

money..Waves after waves of Concord attacks from

Beggs,Heale,Hazeldine,Trenkel,Cowley, were repelled by a resolute and

resilient Hullbridge defense and the young Bridge players were keeping the

Concord defence on their toes with well orchestrated counter-attacks from

the pacy captain Brown,u'18s starlets Lewis Manor and Daniel Barrington

and 19 years old striker Gary Paterson.Just on the half hour, after a great

run from Brown down the right, the cross found Gary Paterson inside the 18

yds box and he was up ended from Mully from behind for what appeared to

everybody a cast in stone penalty. The poor referee waved on ignoring a linesman flag and at the

other end rokie u'16s keeper Lawrence Priddle pulled off a great save from

Beggs shot inside the box.On 37th minutes Concord took the lead and was

one of the less known stars, former EAST THURROCK defensive midfielder

John Turnbull that after a good run in the box slotted home from 10yds

out.1-0 to Concord. The first half ended with the same scoreline and

everyone was expecting Concord to step up another gear and see the Bridge

boys off.Far from it,Sports players dug even deeper and took the game to

Concord becoming more and more dangerous as the time was passing by.A

great free kick from rep side player Dan Barrington hit the cross bar with

the Concord keeper stranded. On the rebound, Lewis Manor hit a good left

foot volley that was pushed over the bar by Rob Small. On 69th minutes a

perfect 3 passes break with an amazing run from captain marvel Brown and a

delightful through ball from Lewis Manor was converted into a goal from

little bull Paterson.Hullbridge 1 Concord 1 with 21 minutes to go.Concord

took off their full backs Ing and Ogilvie, bringing on forwards Hawkins and

Webb, ineffective on the day Beggs was replaced by tommy Lee and

desperately tried to break the Maginot line erected by Hullbridge. There

was no way through, running out of ideas and Brown,Lewis Manor and Paterson

went very close on many occasions to give Hullbridge a win.The result

stayed 1-1 till the end and Concord frustration was epitomized in a lucky

yellow card given to Concord captain Trenkle for stamping on Lee

Daves. What can we say?Considering that we were litterally down to the bare

bones with 7 players injured and 5 away,i spent my friday evening rain

dancing but the "kennness" showed by some Concord people in getting the

game going ahead, knowing that we were struggling to put out a decent

side, has made our team talk...Shame we could have done with a rest after 3

games over Christmas!

I remember that 2-2 draw, you was very humble considering that you are a fat Albanian!! lol

Redders threw the ball at your players feet for both goals, Lee Perry had a chance to make it 3 nil, but unlike him he just missed.

Burnham would be Ryman Prem if it wasn't for your out dated Coaching techniques!!

LOL

To be honest you were the last team we wanted to take points off..but a masterstroke change bringing two shoes on in the last 20 minutes did the trick..and redwood made a great save pushing onto the bar a header from valderrama. He gifted us for the first...Portway goal after 60 seconds was offside and basically you cocked up grini felt so bad towards Mike and Del..my employer and the best mate blushthat's life!one day i'll repay my debt with Burnham and Concord wink
