13th Jan - Rainham - lowish tide, strong wind, overcast and mild (10 degrees)

Magpie, goldfinch, chaffinch, greenfinch, collared dove, wood pigeon, house sparrow, dunnock, swan, wigeon, shoveler - all from the centre.

2000+ lapwing, mallard, pintail, greylag, canada - Aveley pool

Linnet (flock), coot, moorhen, starling.

30+ barnacle, canada, greylag, pied wagtail, 500+ lapwing, black headed, greater black backed, lesser black backed - all at the Target pools.

Cormorant, redshank - on river bank - far side.

For the barnacles - follow the lower path and they are about 1.5 miles out - best viewing point is where the wooden decking is located - can be seen easily, with canada right behind them, and greylag to the right, and large mixed herd of gulls on the main pool. Golden plover nearby, same pools.

Sunday 27th Jan - 14:30 hours - almost hihg tide - temp 8 degrees, very calm.

Thousands of dunlin and knot swarming over the power station and over the Canvey area - guess at 10,000 in all - great black swarms, with the dunlin breaking away every so often to do some formation flying.

Black headed gulls mainly, with one lesser black backed - what has happened to the herring gulls?

Also - curlew, ringed plover, turnstone, redshank, grey plover, crow, about fifty to one hundred brent.

One very small flock of linnet sized birds out on the marsh - too far away to i/d correctly.

The dunlin and knot continued to swarm until after high tide, and quite a lot of the dunlin came in to Two Tree to feed as the tide rose - not too sure where the knot went as they continued to swarm and then headed off in a very long swarm up the river towards Canvey.

Not a great deal of variety but at one time the swarm was so thick that it almost obscured the power station on the Kent side of the river.

No mallard, no teal, no egret.

haven't been out for a couple of weeks, due to late night finishing at work and busy weekends,i usually have a couple of weeks off anyway early march unless i have somewhere special planned like minsmere today, which i could not make due to work.

I am now waiting for the spring migrants to come although local reports of 6 wheatear at rainham today and 6 sand martins on the ingrebourne valley seem to be the earliest arrivals as usual.

I know at hanningfield & abberton sand martins have been seen for the last few weeks

31st August

Water level so low that the only water is in the channels - I asked why they are not topping it up and the answer is that they have used their quota up (they can fill up from the Mardyke).

Two marsh harriers drifted by, four little egrets, quite a few herons, several flocks of goldfinch, and one flock of greenfinch.

Large marsh frog right alongside the boardwalk (towards the wooded area).

Not much else.

The play area now seems to have doubled in size.

I haven't been over there for weeks,i was going to go early saturday morning but with the weather as it was i decided against it because of the kids.

Do you know of a site called ingrebourne hill,it is thames chase and has just opened, think it is a bike trail but has some old gravel pits which seem to attract a decent amount of wildlife.I was in my van and just walked to about 20 yards from the water but there seemed to be a decent amount of wildlife over there,i saw herons, mallards, coots, moorhen, should attract waders and some wintering ducks.May have a wander over there later in the week
