Footballing Snobs

If ever they were to create a league of footballing snobs, then Messrs Lawrensen & Hansen would top the list of that I am sure. They showed themselves up for what they are, they live in a world of premiership football and it is obvious that is as far as they can comprehend, they are spoilt beyond belief. Their analysis of the game at half time was a joke to them; my respect for them has plunged to zero.
[ 09 December 2001: This message was edited by: vic ]

Good ol' Stubbsy though, sticking up for us smile.gif" border="0
The highlight on the BBC coverage has to be Trever Brooking commenting on Greggors looking like Paul Young
As I am up in Cumbria over Christmas and New Year I'll only be an hour away from Burnley so I won't miss a thing

Couldn't agree more. I got their autographs after the game and I wondered why they looked so miserable and eager to leave. Had I of known what they said in the anaylsis then I would have linched them!!! WELL DONE RAY STUBBS!!! I am glad he was presenting the show rather than Lineker, cos he wouldn't have stuck up for us against the 'knowledgable' Hansen & Lawrenson. Well Done Alan, looks like you slipped up on a POTATO SKIN their.

Must say, I was disgusted at the condescending tone of those toffee nosed ***** in the BBC studio. They came to Canvey determined to do a hatchet job on the island and based their programme on scenes of the Essex marshes and Southend pier. Messrs Hansen and Lawrenson, let me tell you, of course Canvey's pitch is only up to non-league standard - WE PLAY IN THE BLOODY NON-LEAGUE - you pair of tarts!
The whole of the half-time analasys was condescending and insulting in the extreme. Good on you Ray Stubbs for at least trying to stick up for the islanders. You have gone up in my estimation, but the other two passengers you had to carry in the studio deserve to be be dumped in the River Thames that you featured so prominently in your programme.
Merv CIFC
[ 09 December 2001: This message was edited by: Frenchy ]

I thought their commentary was absolute pants. I remember at half time they were complaining that the match was uninteresting, but they based that on the teams involved, not what had actually happened on the pitch. And after Canvey scored, they suddenly started going on about how they had rated Canvey and you shouldn't underestimate a team.

You could tell they were used to players with names on their backs as it took twice as long to name the Canvey players as it did to name the Northampton ones.

It didn't spoil my enjoyment of the game though.
I liked the way people were watching from unusual places too, like the Fire Brigade watching from their ladders and the bloke up the road standing on his roof.

I heard BD say that as well and ended up spraying beer all over the place. After finding a calculator I guess Stimmo must be about 51. Old enough to be you Grandfather then Wayno!

I don’t know what Hansen & Lawrenson were expecting from the game. After Wigan, were they expecting Canvey to boss the game. Hansen even criticised the pitch, but it was okay. Crikey, I used to see games at Derby on the telly where there wasn’t a blade of grass to be seen but they got on with it. What they should of said was that Canvey were working their socks off, keeping the Northampton chances down to a minimum, created a couple of chances themselves and who knows in the second half. To go in at half time level was an achievement in itself. Ray Stubbs was more knowledgeable of Canvey’s non-league status and recognised there are three divisions difference between the teams. Thanks to Jeff and the boys for another great day. Let’s look forward to another great day out in the New Year. If we can keep them out for a while, these higher divisioned players are more highly strung. They might press their own self-destruct button again and who knows!

I agree with everything thats been said as i was also disgusted with the half time review but it was almost worth it to see them squirm at the full time whistle. Especially as hansen had suddenly changed his tune and decided canvey "passed the ball well", "quality finishing " and "there was only one team in the game and they deserved to win". I must admit i stuck two fingers up at the tv at this point!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not getting a little big for your boots are you ?
What was so wrong about the comments at half time ?
They were quite right I thought, your pitch is dire ( resembles the Thames Estuary with the tide out ) , the first half was very poor in terms of football, Julian can't run ( be honest) & they had the better opening spell ( goal should of stood ).
Thought it was funny when Brooking mentioned he'd been helped coach some people with your lad that hoofed the ball over the bar by miles.
I think they were trying to make the point that the quality of the match and overall play was poor, but that doesn't take anything away from the achievement of beating a league team. Just keep your feet on the ground, it wasn't top class entertainment for the neutral.
Good luck in the next round - here's hoping you make the quarter finals at least!
Pity you didn't get West Ham at home, though that'd been a good match with JD scoring the winner in the 90th to shut boring brooking up!

Have to agree with ALMOST everything said (sorry ChrisA2001 - not many of us are neutral, and ALL of us are bloody proud of our team and our Island).
Hansen, Lawrenson and Brooking were disgraceful. Did nobody tell them it wasn't the Premiership they were watching?

Didn't we offer enough smoked salmon and champagne at half time? (Shame on you, June)
Ten out of ten to Ray Stubbs who tried to even things up, if only to hide his own embarrasment at the other two ***** and their sarcastic comments.
Hope someone in authority at BBC Sport has bothered to re-run the tape and has realised that Hansen and Co are being paid far too much of our licence fee to produce such a second rate and ignorant "analysis"

Sorry Chris but I would have thought better from you! it was not just Canvey they were dissing it was non league footy.

These guys have shown the viewers they ain't got a clue when it comes to real football, grass roots as it were!

In non league there is passion, determination, dedication for the love of football and not just the money and real grit and will to win for the club and it's adoring fans!

This is real football not ya 15 million pound striker that wont chase a ball unless it is at his feet, or would s**t a brick if just one fan came onto the pitch to congratulate the team.

As a non league footy fan I feel part of my club and not just a spec in a crowd of people prepared to pay such rediculous prices to watch a bunch of over paid girlies that fall over at the slightest of touches and are off for 3 weeks with a bruse.

How many premier footy fans go in the clubhouse after a game and chat to team members about the match? how many would reconise a fan and say hello?

Hansen and lawrenson have not got a clue about real football and what it means to the fans! stick your Premier right up your you know what and give me Non league any day..
There I feel even better now!

I think that exactly was my point.
You're a Canvey Addict, who loves non-league football, but the vast majority of the viewers aren't. We all get very blinkered when supporting our own team, and why not ?
But I am not really sure what exactly Hansen & Lawrensen said that was wrong in itself, to anybody that was watching who isn't a Canvey Non League fan.
Surely you must admit the quality of the 1st half was poor in terms of football normally seen on telly ( and no doubt even at your normal home games ).
It does not take anything away from the excellent acheivement made by Canvey Is though. As one (maybe the only) non-league teams into the 3rd round shows.

Well, I was a neutral, with a bias for Canvey. The thing that got me was that they appeared to be complaining about the quality of football, and then later started saying how good Canvey were. Not both statements could've been true.
Mind you, now I come to think about it, there's plenty of stupid commentary at all levels of all sports I suppose.
