Merthyr Town found themselves a goal down when Shepton Mallet took the lead with scrappy goal after five minutes. Merthyr Town struggled to get a foothold in the game but gradually began to gain control of the game and in the last quarter of the 1st half they completely dominated and thoroughly deserved their equaliser on the stroke of half time when a Marcus Griffiths cross come shot was diverted into his own net by the full back. Merthyr Town induced Cortez Belle at the start of the 2nd half for Steffan Oliver and he immediately caused havoc up front when a flick on from him led to Scott Armitage slotting it home from 6 yards and then almost immediately afterwards after a slack back-pass he charged the ball down from the goalkeeper's attempted clearance to give Merthyr Town a 3-1 lead. The lead was increased further when Tareq Khalil scored a cracker with a shot from the right hand side of the 18 yard area & Craig Steins scored a fifth firing into the bottom left hand corner following a good turn on the edge of the box. Merthyr Town could have and should have had a 6th but Cortez Belle had a penalty saved by the Shepton keeper & Matthew Harris headed the rebound over the bar.

But for the Shepton keeper who had a very good game this coupled with Merthyr Town missing a number of good chances, the score line could have been in double figure and would have seen Merthyr Town top of the league that evening. Man of the Match Marcus Griffiths came off with what looked like a muscle strain but it may only have been precautionary to save him for Tuesday evening when Merthyr Town entertain Cadbury Heath at the Rhiwdda in Taffs Well in their first Home game of the season.

This game provided a great start to Merthyr Town league programme and they will need to consolidate with another win on Tuesday. Jonathan Newall and Jamie Thomas both had good games at the back and Scott Armitage was a threat throughout with his pace.
