Essandoh coup for St Neots

ST Neots Town manager Dennis Greene has unveiled his latest signing in the form of Roy Essandoh.

The 34-year-old, who has a wealth of experience in Non-League football, joins from Bishop’s Stortford where he scored 62 goals in 149 league appearances. He will make his debut in next week’s League Cup tie with Eynesbury Rovers at Hall Road.

The Northern Ireland footballer began his career at Motherwell when he was 18 years of age. Following a short spell at East Fife, he moved to Finland to play for VPS Vanna until the turn of the new millennium when he returned to the United Kingdom.

Upon his return followed the highlight of his career when, somewhat extraordinarily, Essandoh’s agent responded to an appeal on Ceefax by Wycombe Wanderers manager Lawrie Sanchez for a striker and later went on to secure an FA Cup semi-final appearance at the expense of Leicester City by scoring a last-minute goal after coming on as a late substitute.

Essandoh’s goal in the FA Cup Quarter-Final against Leicester City was voted the 76th best FA Cup moment ever in Andy Gray’s FA Cup madness.

However, he was released at the end of his first season in English football, and after short stays at Barnet (where he scored twice against Yeovil in the league and Bournemouth in the LDV Vans Trophy), Cambridge City, Grays Athletic, Bishops Stortford, Gravesend & Northfleet and Kettering Town, Essandoh returned to Bishops Stortford in 2006 where he has remained ever since.

Dennis Greene said: “He is a big powerful player who has a proven track record of scoring goals he will bring us physicality, knowledge and experience.

“At 6’ 3”he will help to share the burden with Bass and Chilly and give us further options. He is a very good signing for us.”
