Does anyone have any information about why Croydon postponed last weekend? Also, why do they have, alone among our clubs, consistently have FC after their name when we are all football clubs?

according to today's Croydon Advertiser Dixon Gill was rushed into hospital and nobody else could get the side together !!

But he's been in touch with Alan Constable and guaranteed they will fulfil their fixtures for the remainder of the season

As for Croydon FC, I don't know why, but, whenever your talking football and mention 'croydon' everyone asks is that croydon at the arena or croydon at galpins road, ignoring the 'athletic'. Might just be to ease the confusion. They changed their name from Croydon Amatuers in the 60's or 70's and as far as I know have been labelled Croydon FC ever since, although of course 'Athletic' did not come into being until years later

Croydon Athletic were formerly known as Wandsworth and Norwood and play at The Crem.

Indeed Smudge. Norwood were playing at the velodrome in Herne Hill and so moved and merged with Wandsworth in the mid 80's. They initially played in the Spartan League and changed their name to Croydon Athletic in 1990. Spent many of my happy formative years kicking about at the 'acc & tab' ground and even played there for a couple of seasons, one with Crescent Rovers and one Eagles FC. As kids when we got kicked off we'd move next door and play at the then Thornton Heath Sports Ground (Home of the mighty Frinton Rovers) and where in the Summers a certain Mr Steve Kember could be found playing cricket. Then when we were kicked off there we'd move down to Mayfield Rec, stick the old jumpers down and play there !!! Happy Days (F***in old Git !!!!) :492:
