I was shocked to hear that Clifford's appeal for a reduced sentence at the Appeals Court this week had been rejected, it doesn't make any sense does it when his last misdemeanor was committed 29 years ago and he has led the life of a monk ever since, raising considerable funds for charities and good causes:

War criminals are still being hunted by Mossad over crimes allegedly committed in WW II.

They must be easy to spot out and about on their zimmer frames.

Eight years is very harsh though isn't it for something that supposedly happened some 29 years ago, we all have skeletons in our cupboards from when we were younger don't we and it was the same with Stuart Hall and Rolf Harris, why not just let sleeping dogs lie.

Very lucky to get away with so little, I tend to think that rapists should get life, abusers get 10 to 15 hard labour. Of course, theirs no hard labour anymore. Some evil people have been involved with this Elm Guest House Crowd, some of their names are well known, you only have to look around the net to find out some household names that will make your toes curl. I should imagine a lot of them are hoping, and also desperately using all their contacts within government and the civil services to hopefully 'let sleeping dogs lie'. It's very much in theirs and the people who have hidden them for decades interests, indeed I'm very suspicious of why anyone would want to let it lie.

No, if our judiciary give a sentence then I feel we should support that. The sentences currently are a joke but if a man has paid the debt laid down then when he is released he should find gainful employment, it isn't for the likes of you and I to determine what that should be.

Let's wait and see what new evidence Ched Evans lawyers bring to the case anyway. We shouldn't be supporting flawed cases if that is so.

Well make up your mind, what is it to be, now you're saying that if our Judiciary give a sentence then we should support it

I think you are struggling to understand a concept here Rhodesly. The Government are who we should seek to influence and in turn the Home Secretary sets tariffs. The Judiciary are bound by the tariff so we have to support them as in all other respects they are separate from the State and can only work within the tariff.

Yeah, I know this stuff is hard for you. Best you stick to the special learning sand pit maybe.

You would be surprised in how many cases, the Home Secretary in the last two decades have over-ruled the sentencing Judge who may have sentenced lets say. a minimum of 25 years on a life-sentence and then gone on to inform the convicted criminal via his solicitor that 'Life in this case, will mean life' !

These are often horrific cases of a one-off crime that doesn't make national head-lines.

I can offer chapter and verse for those disagree !!

Home Secretaries only do what public pressure forces them to do. We get the Home Secretaries and governments that we vote for.

Governments have been soft on crime for the last 60 or so years, it's not working is it?

The CPS are at the heart of failure to prosecute. Afraid to go to trial, afraid to do their jobs, afraid to fail. So when police officers do their jobs and then are let down by the CPS or if the CPS manage to find their guts and get a conviction the tariffs let down the police and ultimately society wouldn't you think?
