Declining money from bookies

Recommended Posts

I would like to get peoples real opinion on this, now they are away from the pressures of looking politically correct in front others at the AGM. That motion put forward was purely for personal reasons and cannot be because of moral reasons. If it was , I would like to declare on behalf of Paul Gascogne, on behalf of kenny Sampson, on behalf of the vast majority of the homeless in our borough, on behalf of all the battered wives out there, that we stop serving alcohol at the club. Now we won’t do this , and why? Because we accept people make certain bad life choices, we accept people enjoy a drink and we accept the vast majority of people drink responsibly. Exactly the same for gambling. And what just tops this farcical motion off is us. Now receiving money from a sponsership for a tournament from the organistions we have condemmed. Try and worm out of it any way you like but it the equivilant of turning down 50 quid from a criminal(which the bookies are not) who offers you it as a matter of good will but accepting his money if he wants to borrow your car!

Lets be honest, there is no moral consistency here and financially the club is paying for somebodies “personal” motivton against a legit group of organisations

Hold on the two issues are not comparable. Alcohol is banned from advertising on television as is smoking. Gambling is even supported by the government in the national lottery. When advertising for gambling is banned there would not be this debate.

oh you have got to be joking me? Really alcohol banned from advertising? You never seen the “ if Carlsburg made xxx” adverts, or the adverts for Russian vodka, or the Budweiser adverts, or the strong bow adverts, they are on tv every single day. You obviously don’t watch tv. Amstel is the official sponsor of the champions league and is advertised before the start of each proggramme. Do your homework before coming back with an adsoulte joke of a reply. Google it, no in fact watch an hour of ITV tonight. In fact to make your argument even more of a joke , minors are allowed in most pubs where it is served and all restaurants were it is served. Minors are not allowed in bookies. Edited by ETFC17

Moral posturing is part of modern day England I'm afraid ....when the board member put forward his proposal I'm sure he thought it was "the right thing " to do.... in fairness he got a 97% endorsement... the thing about it is I bet hardly any of those that voted would have thought twice about accepting the prize money in fact they probably would have welcomed it had this ridiculous proposal had not been put forward....

I think everyone is making a mountain out of a molehill here with some needing to get a better hobby in my opinion.

The chap who put forward the anti Bookies case to the AGM did so in good will and intentions. The floor all but unanimously supported his stance, thankfully the vote was for only ‘do we accept Betting.net prize money or give it to charity?’ That was the vote.

However, Enfield Town FC are not gonna solve the problems that addictive gamblers have by refusing their financial input, ETCC won’t even create a ripple in the ocean so immaterial their power is.

Therefore I’m so glad that our board saw sense when a serious business opportunity arose for the club , now let’s applaud first the good intentions of our sole director who spoke up and equally applaud the sensible reaction to the CONIFA opportunity.

Otherwise we should ban all car drivers who pollute our air, ban all alcoholic and sugary drinks at the stadium, ban smoking within stadium grounds and finally ban and evict all Supporters who dare to drink out of plastic bottles and one use beer glasses. Let’s move on.

Why should we move on when our club are turning down funds due to somebody’s personal motivations against bookies? This talk about good will and intention is rubbish, it was because he knew somebody who irresponsibility gambled his house away. I know an alcoholic who has drunk his family away but that’s his problem and like the gambler in the other case, that’s also his problem, our club shouldn’t lose out as a result. You want to play the moral high ground then you are consistent, gambling destroys lives, so does alcohol, So you turn down both or the sensible option, and you turn down none. Every penny counts at our level. Personal vendettas need to be kept away from financial decisions

ETFC17 I think you’ll find I agree with you albeit in a different tone

Positivity is the board have shown they are open to proper if not all business. Additionally I think their has been a learning curve here as well for future decisions

Well said PR ... it was a subject that should have had a bit more debate rather than a two minute oratory and a rapid show of hands.... like ETFC17 im not a fan of moral posturing but as long as lessons are learnt then good will come from it...

I'm surprised there is more discussion about this than last nigh'ts big win.

To me the facts are simple..

1. A motion was raised at the AGM - and almost everyone voted in favour. So democracy worked and our family-feel club moves on.

Calling members weak-willed seems unfair - if there had been a 50/50 split then I'm sure a more detailed debate would have happened and the vote delayed/deferred.

If the person who put forward the motion had previous experience of the hardships of betting addiction through a friend, so what, fair play to them for having the conviction to put their views forward.

2.For the record I personally would have voted IN FAVOUR of taking the betting money for the cub - as I feel the long term security of our club is more important, and do not see this moral stand as making a material difference. In fact I remember away games at Gravesend in the late 90s when they had a bookmaker in the ground - - and it was great being able to bet on all manner of things about the Enfield game itself!

Plus is the 50/50 draw and golden goal not types of betting?

If people feel that strongly then they need to attend the AGM, or raise their issues/concerns with the Board who can then discuss them at the next opportunity

3 The CONIFA World Cup is a great acheivement for the club - and a real opportunity to drive awareness & grow our fanbase, as well as securing vital income. Congrats for all the hard work!
