When Saturday Comes Magazine

Recommended Posts

I see from another Forum that the magazine 'When Saturday Comes' is sadly in trouble due to falling sales, it would be a crying shame wouldn't it if it folds, the cult magazine was launched in 1986 and exceeded all expectation becoming a full time business. Before Karen deletes the thread for not being SSML related, who can forget the article in 2007 (see below) about the son of the so called Great One, Clement Temile, who was then the Kentish Town supremo and and an article on Arlesey Town's Natasha Orchard-Smith (see below) who sadly left Hitchin Road recently following the departure of Matt Endersby and James Hatch:

Winslow Boy - There are always so many good articles and pictures in the magazine, it must be produced by real football connoisseurs. This article mentions Brimsdown in the context that, following the sale of Southbury Road in 1999 by pariah Tony Lazarou, the London Borough of Enfield has a population bigger than Newcastle, Nottingham and Wolverhampton yet boasts just one small ground, namely Goldsdown Road, although that was pre. 2011 when the Queen Elizabeth II Stadium was adapted to host football:

Agreed. The magazines I used to buy are pretty much redundant now, due to the rise of websites such as PornHub...

I remembered reading this 'When Saturday Comes' article back in March 2006 where the iconic Wolverton stand was featured. Former SSML Club Wolverton were founded in 1887 but were sadly wound up in 1992 and Wolverton Park, which was opened in 1885, unsurprisingly redeveloped for housing, the structure of the wooden stand still remains though and acts as 'an ornamental feature' on the edge of the housing estate which was built on top of the hallowed turf:

Looked a lovely ground with character. A good read and good pictures.

I see there was an article in yesterday's Guardian about the magazine being in trouble, it's so sad isn't it that all the old fashioned football values have pretty much disappeared now and the introduction of VAR has totally ruined the game. Not a weekend goes by now without anti-VAR chants from the stands amid agonising delays over prolonged reviews that leave players and fans alike totally in the dark ahead of decisions that leave you wondering if there is much point in watching any more. Take the Tottenham v Sheffield United game last week, it took four minutes to decide that John Lundstram was offside, had he been wearing a boot size smaller he would have been level with play, that's not the beautiful game we know and love is it:
