He hasn't retired! He's become a Specialist Assistant Referee

Once a referee is promoted off of the Spartan League, (s)he becomes a referee on the Isthmian and Southern Leagues and an Assistant Referee on National South.

They could be then promoted as a referee (to National South) or assistant referee (to National Premier).

At the end of the 3rd season of being promoted, they have to decide whether to continue as a Referee or an Assistant Referee. Some people prefer/are better at Refereeing and like wise for AR. Jeff prefers to be an AR.

Past Spartan official Alan Cresswell has just been promoted to National League AR. I can't remember if it is 2 or 3 years since he left the Spartan. He will need to make a choice soon as to whether he stays as a referee on the Isthmian (and need 3 promotions to become a Football League referee), or become a Specialist Assistant Referee (being one step from becoming a Football League AR)

There are different skill sets for both. Philip Sharp (Herts RDO) was an ordinary referee, and was the first to admit it, but as an AR he was the best in the world which was shown when he was AR to Collina in the 2002 World Cup Final!

I was only joking ? ⬅️

Good luck to him.

I wonder when a certain match Official who posts on here will finally hang up his boots, or should I say flag, it can't be too much longer can it.

I was perfectly serious, I have known him for at least fifteen years, possibly longer, so he must be getting close to retirement age now

I thought it was time we had a thread on Referees and their trusted Assistants particularly in the light of the SSML currently looking for an Appointments Officer for Division One and Two who will work hand in hand with Premier Division Appointments Officer Peter Clayton, applications close on Wednesday 3 June:

Has an appointment been made as yet out of interest:

Referee Appointment Officer for Division One and Two

Applications are invited for the above post. Duties include:

  • Appointing referees and assistant referees to Division 1 and 2 of the League,
  • Arranging re-appointments at short notice.
  • Working closely with the Referee Appointments Officer (Premier Division)
  • Working effectively with County FAs to ensure promotion candidates receive appropriate appointments for their intended promotion level

Good working knowledge of the FA refereeing system is required, together with knowledge and experience of how referee appointment procedures work via the Full-Time system. The post-holder will be based at home, must have strong organisational and IT skills including Word and Excel. The ability to work to tight schedules and deadlines is vital.

The post is voluntary but there is a financial offer available to the successful candidate,

Please contact Tony Weight, Spartan South Midlands League for further details and a discussion about the post. Closing date for Applications Wednesday June 3rd 2020.

So Chris Hartley has been appointed as Referee Appointment Officer for Division One and Two, the best of luck to him in the role:

Smallholder - I think there will be an outcry if PetetheGreek is given games at Coles Park next season, he already knows the new New Salamis Manager Gus Gulfer well as they go back a long way as well as all his backroom team Mickie Leslie, Andrew Kouroushi, Antony Ioannou and Asshwin Giridran.

It's always amusing to see an Official take a tumble so long as he or she doesn't hurt themselves, the guys face on the bench is a picture:

Ref takes a tumble :)

I assume this is still current regulation:

https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/40739861

Players at grassroots level who assault a match official will now receive a minimum five-year ban, the Football Association has told BBC Sport.

The new laws, to be introduced for the 2017-18 season, will apply to 'step five' - four tiers beneath the National League - and leagues below.

There will also be at least an 84-day ban and £100 fine for any physical contact with a match official.

Verbal threats will incur a minimum 56-day ban, or six matches, and £50 fine.

These sanctions will be a minimum, but a commission can increase the ban based on aggravating factors.

Earlier this month the FA also confirmed 32 grassroots leagues in England will trial sin-bins in the 2017-18 season.

Players will now spend 10 minutes out of the game if they are shown a yellow card for dissent.

This was an amusing thread from a number of years ago and I see that PetetheGreek got on his high horse as usual threatening to report Jonno to his Club (Hoddesdon Town) for comments he had made, I wonder if he phoned him as well like he did me once, I put the phone down for five minutes to make a cup of tea and he was still ranting. Anyway the thread started with Rebadiah Hongfield asking the simple question why David de Gea was allowed to wear a different coloured top under his short sleeved green one and then it all kicked off over three pages, where have all these posters disappeared to:

Plenty of years left for petethegreek to pound up and down the touchline ?

Some of the linos in the Middlesex Premier Division don't look far of 90 years old ? and can hardly move ? So petethegreek is still a youngster ?

I have been searching high and low to see whether I can spot a certain match Official who, now only occasionally, posts on the Forum, the photographs are from an Assistant Referee Workshop on 11 September 2017 in Hertfordshire:
