FA Vase Fifth Round - Saturday 11 February

Recommended Posts

Tring Athletic, the only SSML survivor in the competition at the Fifth Round stage, entertain North West Counties League Premier Division Bury AFC on Saturday afternoon. I wonder whether the kick off time might be brought forward an hour to avoid a possible repeat of the embarrassing floodlight failure that 'plagued' the Fourth Round tie with Walsall Wood:

Sorry to sound like a broken 45rpm, sorry, 78rpm record but as stated previously the FA Vase prize money is absolutely 'criminal' isn't it, Tring Athletic will receive just £2,250 if they beat Bury AFC on Saturday afternoon:

All the Fifth Round ties, refreshingly all kicking off at 3.00pm on Saturday, just the one Step 6 Club remains in the competition and only one previous Finalist, Newort Pagnell Town:

Good luck to former SSML Club Harefield United in their FA Vase Fifth Round tie against Peacehaven & Telscombe at Preston Park, only the second time they have reached this far before in the competition when getting to the Sixth Round in 1989/90:

Tring Athletic will coin it in tomorrow with a large crowd and away following expected, the adjacent Rugby Club's Clubhouse will also be used for hospitality:

I wonder how Leighton Town are feeling today knowing that they had every opportunity to host Jersey Bulls at a packed out Bell Close this afternoon and with the cash tills ringing loudly:

Disappointment also for Harefield United who lost on penalties this afternoon following a 0-0 draw with dogged Southern Combination Premier Division outfit Peacehaven & Telscombe. A groundhopper from another Forum was in attendance at Preston Park:

Harefield United 0 Peacehaven & Telscombe 0 (3-1 to Peacehaven on penalties). FA Vase Fifth Round. Crowd: 350-400 approx. Admission: £8, including programme.
Lower mid-table Combined Counties North versus upper mid-table Southern Combination. The most notable name on the pitch being Harefield's ex-pro Richard Pacquette.
It must be 15 years since I last visited Preston Park. The ground itself is totally unchanged since then. A low, seated stand on one side with a covered standing area opposite. Indeed, with a pleasingly old-fashioned wooden fence around the pitch, it is probably the same as it was 30/40 years ago.
Nice, modern clubhouse, though, which I suspect wasn't here on my last visit and it was busy throughout the afternoon. The only black mark being that r**by was on the telly at half-time.
The game itself: On nine minutes a low cross to the far post found Cal Edwards for the visitors who basically trod on the ball when the goal was at his mercy. Five minutes later, the same player fired over the bar from inside the box.
Just before half time, home keeper Ballheimer (any relation to the Hendon icon?) needed to make a smart save from Peacehaven's Ross Barclay.
The second half was the very definition of stalemate.
There was some excitement when, late on, Ballheimer sliced a kicked clearance and the ball fell to Hart whose shot was cleared off the line.
0-0 it finished, so it was straight to a dreadful shoot-out which Peacehaven won 3-1 to delight the inebriated Brighton supporters who were present to support them today.
It is almost 30 years since Harefield were members of the Isthmian League. With today's crowd, that seems hard to believe.

Here we go, the groundhopper from another Forum, who painstakingly lists all the players, was at Cow Lane, at least the Tring Athletic coined it in with an attendance of 840:

FA Vase 5th Round
Tring Athletic 1-2 Bury AFC

Admission - £8, Attendance - 840
Venue: The Grass Roots Stadium - This was my first visit to this charming little venue with the black wooden raised stand only seating about 40 and the wooden cladded clubhouse next to it with local offerings on tap. There is a covered standing area running full length behind one goal and a small covered standing area offset on the opposite touchline to the main stand. Behind the opposite goal is a very old tree with a wooden walkway built around it! Today the neighbouring rugby club clubhouse was open for the sizeable following from Bury.
Game - It was nice to see my hometown team down south and not too far from where I currently live whilst also getting a new tick in. Both sides are step 5. Overall I would say Bury were the better side but only marginally with Tring having an excellent central midfielder (number 17) and a solid back line with a pacy forward causing issues for Bury’s walking football speed defenders. The away side had the early momentum shooting downhill and opened the lead through Ben Wharton when a cross/shot was palmed onto him and bounced in. Some calls for offside but it looked good. 0-1. Bury continued to dominate however Tring looked dangerous with pacy counter attacks. Bury hit the crossbar on a few occasions but couldn’t increase the lead. Godlove Oppong equalised for Tring in the 75th minute when he broke free with his pace, the same run which he had made all game and looked dangerous, then rounded Bury keeper Jack Atkinson to roll the ball in. 1-1. Immediately after Tring nearly took the lead but an excellent Atkinson save kept the scores level. Bury scored a second in the 87th minute when a Jack Tinning corner was headed in by veteran Niall Cummins to send the away following into raptures.

Sadly and disappointingly there is no further SSML interest in the FA Vase this season however here is the Sixth Round draw, I wonder whether Newport Pagnell Town will go all the way again:
