Prospects for next season

Out of the 5 games I've watched so far I haven't a clue on how our season will go.

I've seen nothing so far that tells me how competitive a side we're going to be.

In the games iv'e watched it's been too jumbled up with trialists, EDS players and key players missing to form any sort of opinion.

Our last 3 games, in particular against Southend and Wealdstone will hopefully give us a better indication on what sort of season we might have.

Eddie don't worry the first few league game's can  used to bed in the full first team in

 

Hitting the road running isn't important there are 46 games in the season to catch up in.

Doing all the squad recruitment early was only so players could have plenty of time for their holidays.

Not sure pre season is an accurate barometer of how a season might pan out. How many times have we seen clubs win every pre season match only to have a terrible start to the season and vice versa. I think 10 games in is a decent marker to judge how we may do.

besides Eddie we have such an up and down season we would be better going to Blackpool and riding the big one to get any idea how the season is going to shape up

You're correct that it's not a totally accurate reflection on the season ahead but I'd say you can get an indication of players individual performances and how the squad as a whole is gelling especially when we've almost a brand new squad.

Problem at our level is that players are in and out due to prior commitments so it’s impossible to get a settled side until usually the last 2 or 3 games of pre season. You could have a player have an outstanding pre season but considering they’re playing mostly lower league opposition in a non competitive environment I’m not sure you can trust that judgement either?

If we only go by last season I'd say hitting the ground running is crucial rather than playing catch up at the back end.

This coming season could be different whereby as a new squad we might take some time to get going.

Agree that it's difficult to judge how players will do when only playing lower league opposition but as far as 'non competitive' goes, most of the pre season games I've watched have been very competitive.

Basingstoke for example were busting a gut flying into tackles trying to prove a point against higher opposition.

Have you read the Scott Davies comments after the Reading friendly in the Maidenhead Advertiser (the link is on our Twitter page)?

Scott is obviously formulating what he thinks is likely to be his starting XI, & thinks 6 or 7 that started the Reading match will start the season. 
 

I haven’t been to any pre-season matches (& probably won’t be going to the remaining ones) but that & Scott’s experience of what is required to be competitive gives me the confidence the recruitment & pre-season is going well.

Can’t read those articles as you have to subscribe, so annoying as these were free for so long but only recently they’ve started to charge.

There were 5 senior players missing from the Reading game so 6 or 7 from that game to start the season makes sense.

Lets see how we get on in our next 2/3 games to see where we are as a team.
