Enfield Town 1-1 Tonbridge Angels

Recommended Posts

  • Tally Ho changed the title to Enfield Town 1-1 Tonbridge Angels

Awful game in which we showed no commitment or passion in the first half and then stepped up in the second.

When it takes over a minute to take a throw-in because nobody's is showing/wanting the ball...you know you have problems.

Need to go into Maidenhead with a far more grit and determination ✊🏻✊🏻🤞🏻🙏🏻

Before Thommo's goal the only real chance we created was Lemar's header which was easily saved by their keeper. I thought the game was crying out for a target man / striker who can hold the ball up and bring others into play .. what we've been looking for all season really?

To not get three points against a very poor side was very disappointing....

I also think the team need to be braver/positive - to bring all 10 outfield players back when we are defending a corner or a set piece invites teams onto us - why not leave at least two up as it makes our opponents being three players back?

Unfortunately on that showing we aren't going to get anything from Maidenhead, Torquay or Dorking in the next three games. I hope I am wrong!

Tonbridge came intent to sit back and catch us on the break. With a solid defence and some pace up front, their plan looked to be working perfectly. We looked short of ideas going forward. For all the industry and running of Bullas and Gallimore, we miss the guile of a Jack Bates.

The Tonbridge goal was poor for our part. Benjamin tried to drive through two defenders in the final third (- when the sensible pass would've been out to Leonard). He lost possession and Tunbridge broke quickly on us, winning a corner. The near post flick reached the the striker 6 yards out who couldn't miss.

Meanwhile, we showed endeavour and had a fair amount of possession, but barring a Youngs scuffed shot from a corner, really didn't do much to trouble the Tonbridge keeper (aged approximately 13) in the first half.

Tonbridge could easily have doubled their lead with a Pavey diving header straight at the grateful Wright after another counter-attack.

It wasn't until we started to show a bit of urgency in the latter stages of the second half that we began to force Tonbridge into mistakes.

In the end we deserved the equaliser with Thompson applying a composed finish having beaten the offside trap. On another day we could've won it. Equally, its far more common for us to lose it in the dying moments, so theres some relief that didn't happen.

Lacking creativity and potency, Gavin needs to recruit...and fast!

I disagree that it was an awful game, though obviously it could have been better. I thought we started well, a la Chelmsford a bit. But simply not creative or fast enough. Around about the halfway line there was a lot of sideways passing which gave Tonbridge more than enough time to get back and arrange their defence. We needed not to dilly dally and take risks. (See Buendia's goal in the FA cup tonight).
Obviously the familiar sinking feeling set in after their goal but I didn't feel we were overrun. I'm a very quiet supporter - no singing or shouting - but at half-time I found myself going to the tunnel and shouting, "Keep going, still in this". That's how I felt and that's how we were.
2nd half so much more urgent and forward looking. I thought it was going to take a scrappy goal to get through that packed defence but then suddenly Moses parted the Red Sea and in acres of space popped in the equalizer. I was expecting a flag for offside but no, thankfully.
I can't fathom the difference between the pre-match pep talk and the halftime one.
On the basis of Chelmsford, I'd say going down and cut adrift at the bottom.
After today, probably still down but a bit more hope. We haven't performed well enough against the other poor performers recently.
But yeah, a late goal in the right net was a good way to end the game. Keep going.

I thought they had bags of pace. Poor game really.

This time last year: 18 points in 26 games, 22nd in the league. Gap was 8 to Salisbury.

By April 26th: 48 points, 30 points out of the possible 60 we could have got to stay up.

This year: 21 points in 25 games, 22nd in the league. Gap is 4 points to Farnborough.

Everything is pointing to the fact we’ve had a slightly better season, and the gap is closer to safety than it was last year.

I reckon it’ll be around 45-48 points to stay up this year by the skin of our teeth. So around 27 points needed in the last 21 games to stay up. It’s very doable, and we have shown we are capable of doing it. Granted a fairly different squad/fixtures.

H&R (A) on the final day I imagine will be the game that might separate us from going down and staying up.

Struggling to see us picking up 12 points without some miraculous recruitment.
