Chalk Lane was awash with groundhoppers last night and 'rubberneckers' following Cockfosters amazing FA Vase exploits:

Cockfosters 1-1 AFC Welwyn
SSML Prem, Adm £10/£5 Att est 130

Fosters were missing a few key players here, but still dominated proceedings, missing a few good chances before a Welwyn player cut in from the left and scored from a tight angle on 43 mins. Fosters equalised on 49, a cross from the left finished from close range. More missed chances from Fosters followed, although it took a good save from the home keeper from a Welwyn free kick on 89 min to prevent an unlikely away win. Fosters still well placed to make the play-offs, albeit in 4th or 5th. Distinctly colder tonight so glad of just the 5 min walk back & indoors 21.46.

Cockfosters 1 v 1 AFC Welwyn - Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division.
Programme 24 pages £2.00 - Admission £5.00 (c) - Att. 116.

For what was ultimately a frustrating evening for the hosts and one where there were signs that the recent glut of games that they have had to play (and they still have a minimum of seven games not including a likely play off match(es)), was starting to catch up with them. The absence of players such as George Lutaaya were keenly felt over the course of proceedings and for much of the contest, play just seemed a little too frantic and putting too much reliance on Tyreece Robertson on the right. In addition, AFCW were better than expected opposition, though when you are playing a team that has reached a Wembley final then it does not take much in the way of incentive to raise your game and also the now obligatory baked and bouncy pitch did not assist, especially when play was overly rushed in nature.
Over the course of the first time there were too many examples of Robertson delivering decent crosses from the right but they were either delivered slightly too early or they were slightly out of the reach of the likes of Kendall Gyamfi or Lee Dykes. They still managed to create chances and if there was any levels of apprehension about their play they would have been relieved if Junior Palva had not been positioned just in front of the goalline to clear Junior Moses shot which was heading into the far corner.
Going forward AFCW on occasion posed as much as an attacking threat as their opponents and the home defence did get into a muddle when dealing with one foray forward and would have been grateful that Courtney Massay aimed straight at Moses rather than applying an angle that almost certainly would have led to a better outcome.
Despite the above, it was still the case that Cockfosters had the better of the first half exchanges but AFCW still pushed forward more than expected and took the lead just before the interval with Guiseppe Delgaudio cutting in from the left and placing his shot wide of the exposed Mohammed Otuyo
The visitors lead lasted a mere four minutes after the break with Cockfosters deservedly levelling when Moses delivered a cross from the light and although the ball was bouncing high through the six yard area, Robertson did very well to wrap his foot around the ball and hook a volley into the net.
Levelling should have provided the foundation for Cockfosters to be able to gain control of proceedings, but their approach play often lacked delivery with the final pass into the penalty area often lacking in direction. They would no also rue missing an excellent chance when Moses' free kick rebounded off of Trent Carter-Rogers in the AFCW goal straight to Jay Lovell who failed to steady himself and his rushed volley ended up closer to the square at adjacent Cockfosters Cricket Club than the AFCW net. There were several further attempts from Robertson, Dykes et al that were either off target or saved by Carter-Rogers who as the second half evolved was proving to be a difficult barrier to breach.
For the visitors the second half emphasis was largely on defence, a role that they undertook in a effective manner, though as P outlined in his precis of proceedings they almost gained an unlikely win when Massay's fiercely struck free kick was well saved by the diving Otuyo in the final seconds of normal time. The AFCW defence continued plus Carter-Rogers successfully held out over the course of stoppage time and for their efforts the visitors just about deserved a share of the spoils. Dropping points sees Cockfosters remain in sixth place but with three games in hand and a solitary point deficit over the two clubs immediately above them, the obtaining of a play off berth should be achieved though it looks a difficult task with so many matches over too short a period for them to reach third place which would lead to a home play off match presumably on 28th April.
Chalk Lane retains its rustic charm and with it being very hemmed in terms of available space bringing facilities up to the standard required to play at the next level would be a challenge but there is clearly ambition at the club even though there is a marked sense of the club taking a traditional approach to the way that the club is run. Very noticeable that there is much more of an elderly demograph to the Club’s regular supporters, though this is gradually changing with the clubs recent successes.
One aspect of convention that the club maintains is the provision of a very good paper programme which has barely changed in format for many years. Fully up to date with details of the clubs Tuesday win against Dunstable Town, the warmth of it having just been printed out was still apparent when the programmes were delivered.
As P also noted it was also an increasingly chilly evening and this was not an evening for hanging around on station platforms over the course of the return journey. However, this was precisely what occurred with a twelve minute wait for a Piccadilly Line service off of Cockfosters station and then as part of the avoiding Zone One routine, Blackhorse Road was reached, the Suffragette Line service back to Barking became later and later and later. Thankfully, this service took priority when entering Barking station and the c2c/GBR service followed in directly behind and was therefore intercepted. Indoors at 23.37.
