Going full time

Recommended Posts

Quite right we were but we had large crowds.......when they flittered away we went back part time....as i recall. As to the ground, as it isn't the clubs(and i have had this discussion with David Holden about a ten year lease)is it worth spending a lot of money on it? I would love Stonebridge Road to be the permanent home.

I can't think for the life of me why so many people turned up for that one. And to think the winners on the night didn't go on to win the championship, after it being billed by many as a 'title decider'.

To be honest, I agree that we have to be cautious - rushing into going full-time without the necessary money would be disastrous - but then Brian has always been sensible with money since he became chairman, so I suspect he recognizes this.

A similar crowd turned up at Crawley on Saturday for their battle of the top 2 in the Dr Martens - mind you, both Crawley & Weymouth get decent crowds anyway, so that crowd wasnt quite as surprising

The league table below is results taken up to 80 minutes of play.

If going full time means that we increase fitness and concentration in the last 10 minutes, and hold onto results. Play offs are easily obtainable.

Intersting table...not sure it proves anything. Try doing it again but taking away the first seven or whas it eight games of the season for all the clubs. Gravesend have ben part time throughout.

And it should have been a championship decider. I thought it was all over. Canvey had some very odd results very unexpected to follow.. It did show that the support is out there.

Is there anything else that could attract bigger crowds? We've done the 'Kids 4 free' and 'ladies 4 half', that doesnt work. I think it's more the fact that people see it as classy sunday league Football rather than a team in a nationwide league. However, in the club's recent change in results, i have seen a few more people trhinking about starting to watch the fleet. We shall see on saturday...

BRING ON BARNET!!!

But how many people in the Gravesham area have even heard of the Nationwide/Conference League or even know that Gravesend have a team. Advertise, Advertise & then Advertise preferably in the town, Supermarkets, petrol stations etc. You can walk around the town all day & not realize we have a team which is not helped by the distance to the ground. A few road signs saying G&N FC this way may help.

I think maybe if the ground was more attractive from the outside then maybe more people would be convinced to come in.

You have to admit, from the road the place looks a little run down...Rusting roof, Bushes/Weeds hanging over the wall, paint peeling etc.

From the outside people have no idea what the ground is like inside.

We now have one of the nicest bars I have seen, and a pitch alot of premier league teams would love!

I think, if you smarten up the outside, people may be more inclined to see whats inside!

I agree the Stonebridge Road aspect does look pretty grim. Before we go full time, we should rip the terrace roof off, build the terrace another 10-15 feet back (which should add 1000 capacity) then put a new roof on.

A smart appearance should attract attention and extra on the gate.

Completly agree Gary

The back of the side terrace stand should form the outer perimeter of the ground, without the gap between the existing stand and the outer fence/advertising hoardings. We could add three or four levels of terracing which would add to the capacity. No idea what it would cost but we need to increase capacity to meet the next ground grading requirements

I remember sitting in the Somerset Arms one evening with my old 'Shepeard Neame' Fleet shirt on. A few blokes were at the bar generally chatting about Gravesend town. The subject went to footy and one of them pointed towards me, saying "Look! There's a Charlton supporter sitting over there!" Yeah, righto, mate.

...this morning I left for work wearing my Gravesend Scarf, at Rochester Station, I bought a coffee from the shop and the shop worker commented "they did well last night didn't they" pointing towards my scarf.

After a swift punch up the head, and a knee to his groin, I pointed out the fact the it was a Gravesend scarf and there was no way I was an Arsenal supporter.

I think I handled the situation quite well!!! The anger management sessions are working wonders!!

Greetings from Ontario, Canada, havn't posted anything for some time but keep up to date with current events.

Our North American (sorry US -there is a difference) friend is correct in his explanation of the election process in the 50's. I also believe there were only two senior leagues outside of the Football League, the Southern and Northern. Mind you, there were better teams in the Ismithian and Athenian leagues, but they were amateur leagues. (There were 2 notable teams coming out of that system - Wimbledon & Wycombe). Anyway, I digress, the Fleet in the 50's were certainly good enough to play in the "bigs". They were considered better than Gillingham in those days. The only trouble, if they had got in, could they have sustained it? There was no real farm system and the players, like Logie, Scarth, Heathcote, MacDonald, Carson, Shaw, Bridge, Robertson, Thomas and Day had all had their day (no pun intended). They would have done well for one season, then what? I think what the team is trying to do now is probably better in the long term. Lets just secure our safety first, then move on from there. I think a new facility is a must.

# 1 CANADIAN Fleet fan.

Totally agree the 50's team would have struggled(but maybe we could have attracted new players)more than one season.....and i think the way the current board is approaching the subject is the right way to go. This is like a jig-saw puzzle....until you have all the pieces......you can't complete the picture!
