Today's referee.

Recommended Posts

Does anyone really care about the result anyway?? Yes - its always nice to win, but its a friendly, so who cares??

Yes - Proths was at fault - no need to handle it, but as he said on RK, it was an instinctive thing. At least, as I said earlier, we have Gledhill to cover the position whatever the suspension situation.

Trouble is now, that with refs instructed to follow rules, it must make players even more reluctant to bother tackling in pre-season games, for fear, not only of injury, but also of picking up bookings or worse, red cards. It doesnt exactly help sides to prepare for the new season as a result.

There were several tackles flying about, Roberts should have been at least booked if not sent off for his tackle and retaliation on Porter but Porter also lashed out so let's be grateful he ignored that one, Hills was also lucky not to be booked as was Mark Saunders, but as someone said earlier Protheroe is the one to blame the ref was just doing his job, we have enough cover for one game.

As for Chad wearing his Gills shirt, was it the new one.

Still say though that, if you treat friendlies as competitive games for red & yellow cards, then they must also be treated as competitive games for suspension purposes, at least for cards earned in the friendlies.

Whilst that would be unacceptable during the season proper, as teams would simply arrange friendlies to avoid suspensions in more important games, pre season games have already been arranged and are not being arranged to avoid suyspensions - indeed now, teams wouldnt play any pre season games if they want to avoid suspensions !! (Obviously any suspensions earned from last seasons competitive fixtures would still apply to league games only)

Wouldn't the sensible (ah - that'll never be used by FIFA then) option be a suspension for the next listed game at the time of the offence - That way clubs can't arrange a quick friendly after the red card to avoid suspension, but the ban is served in appropriate conditions.

Why's it instinctive? Is his first thought always to handle the ball?
