Morecambe 1-3 Gravesend by Callum 21 Aug 2004

Morecambe are yet to record their first win of the new season. Many fans thought Morecambe would be challenging for promotion based on performances so far it appears it’ll be a tough and disappointing season.

The Shrimps looked to show their potential when Wayne Curtis fired a shot from 20 yards out which sailed harmlessly over the bar after seven minutes.

Manny Omoyinmi went close for Gravesend after a close range shot was saved by Adam Sollitt.

The game was similar to many games that fans saw last season. Players were not creating opportunities and there was a distinct lack of movement. Morecambe were unimaginative in their play with most of the possession resulting in a long ball up to Danny Carlton who was tightly marked by the Gravesend defence.

Gravesend soon took a much deserved lead. Jay Saunders got above Michael Howard to head in at the far post. Despite going a goal down, the home side were still not creating anything and looked very dull.

The Shrimps finally had their second chance of the game. Michael Twiss managed to create some space for himself before firing a shot into the side netting.

The whistle blew for half time and after a disappointing first half the north stand booed the players off the pitch.

Morecambe started the second half where they left the first half. Long balls and sloppy passing were frustrating the fans. One of the criticisms of Jim Harvey in the last game was his tactics and positioning of players. The game saw Danny Carlton alone up front and wasn’t able to create anything. The only balls Carlton was receiving were high long balls and nearly everyone was headed away by the Gravesend defence.

It wasn’t long before Gravesend got their second. Manny Omoyinmi scored from the edge of the area after the hour mark and it looked likely that Morecambe will have to wait for their first win of the season. Again the goal did not spark anything from the home side.

Just after the hour mark, Rogan was brought on for Swan and Stringfellow switched to the centre of denfence.

After 65 minutes Twiss was taken off and was replaced by Thompson. As Twiss walked off he was booed by the fans after a poor performance. Thompson was one of a few players actually playing in their favoured position and soon got to work taking on the Gravesend defence from the right wing.

Gravesend scored a third to condemn the Shrimps to an embarrassing home defeat. Jay Saunders scored his second of the game

After 80 minutes Carlton got a rare chance at the edge of the 18 yard box which hit the roof of the North Stand. A minute later, a great cross by Thompson set up Curtis to head the ball into the net to give the Shrimps a consolation goal.

Since coming on Rogan had a terrific impact taking on players at having a great determination and must be considered for a starting place next match.

At full time, fans booed and chants of “Harvey Out” could clearly be heard despite it only being a few people. Many fans questioned whether the manger could take the team any further and despite signing some quality players, the team is still playing football that is uncreative and chances are few and far between.

Hi. Just one thing, I misinterpreted the boo's for Twiss. I've editted the report before.

Your side really tought us a lesson and brought us down to earth. We're suppose to be going for promotion but this is the worst start we've ever made to a conference season.

"The match sponsors today aparrantly couldn't bring themselves to name a Morecambe player as man of the match (which is what happens at every home game) so they gave it to one of the Gravesend lads. Our commercial manager who hands out the awards said it was the first time he's ever seen that happen in his 10 years of doing it."

Blimey - it was only 3-1!

I walked round the ground at the end with the Commercial guy and he told me the same, he has been there 12 years and every time a Morecambe bloke has been given it, except then when Jay Saunders was awarded it. Nice bloke too their commercial guy, very honest and he praised the lads saying that we did Morecambe good and proper.

The M6 Toll is definitely quicker, until you get to the tollbooths and later when you rejoin the M6 proper. Those are the places you lose the time you've made up, but a good journey all the same. Thanks Dave.

Missed the kick-off queuing up for 'decent' food, steak butty, lovely. No Rouse (suspended/holiday) replaced by Skinner, no Jackson (injured in reserve game Wednesday) replaced by...Oh! no. Saunders.

As usual we took the advantage early on making our presence known. Attack, attack, attack.

Manny went close early on and Roy was doing his 'thang' in the box, the Morecombe defence didn't know how to handle either of them. Wilkerson seemed comfortable, despite one our two heart stopping fumbles, over all he picked up where he'd left off against Canvey. Our defence was steady, although Gledhill' passing was a bit wayward, and one incident when Skinner passed the ball back to Wilkerson and one of their forwards ran on to the ball. Drury for once was given space, and as usual at times was a little greedy. Surey was great, yet again, but McKimm still doesn't seem his old self. Poor passing, and losses the ball to easily. Jay Saunders was replacing Jacko, but what a revelation. Okay, so his passing isn't great and his ball control needs a lot of work, but, just like Jacko he got into the right positions at the right times, but he has something Jacko now lacks, a little bit of pace. He put himself about and was a total nuisance to the opposition, a 100% improvement. We may have a replacement for the 'glorious' Jacko. There were times when we lost our way, lumping the ball forward and getting it back straight away, trying to scramble it clear, putting us under continuous pressure. More down to a lack of foresight and a lack of concerntration. We looked vunerable, but with stoic resolve we weathered the worst and came through.

As for Morecombe, they looked like we did this time last year. At a loss, and not going anywhere fast. Danny Carlton and Chris Blackburn try to bully and brawl their way through the opposition. Both were booked, both should of been sent off.

A long, but satisfying day.

Its always nice to read someones account of a day out to a match, when you cant get there your self.

When i went to accy last season we chose to go through tamworth etc so going around the toll road instead of on it.Its strange doing it that way because you always criss cross over it but end up at the same ending.

3 points against york next week and then we are right up there umongst them............up the fleet
