FA Trophy – First Round

SHEPSHED DYNAMO 0 vs WILLENHALL TOWN 1

Already this season these two Unibond 1st Division sides have meet on three previous occasions, with the Reds on top with two away wins (league and FA Cup replay) and a draw at Noose Lane in the FA Cup.

And with £1,800 prize money at stake this was always going to be a close game to call. The hosts were still seething over the last encounter when they lost in dramatic style in a sudden death penalty shoot out, that bitter defeat meant they employed win at all costs tactics which left a sour taste for football lovers.

The Reds on the other hand were boosted by the news that Creighton had turned down a very lucrative offer from Telford to remain with the Reds,

The first action of the game came on 18 minutes when Reds keeper Vaughan was called on to make a diving save to deny a Gomm shot, a minute later and a loose ball fell to Shepshed’s figure of hate, Quilt, who blasted the ball first time only to see his effort hit the side netting.

On 22 minutes a Whitcombe volley was tipped over the bar by keeper Baldwin, from the conceded corner, Colcombe curled the ball goal wards and again Baldwin tipped it over the bar.

The first half was marred by an ugly incident when defender Lambert went down claiming Quilt had elbowed him in the face. Fortunately, the linesman could see the 2-foot distance from the striker’s arm and the defender’s face. However, instead of booking the defender for poor play-acting the young ref booked Quilt.

The second half came alight on 63 minutes when Quilt headed a corner goal wards, Baldwin appeared to have caught the ball behind his goal line, but the officials were having none of it.

With the ref loosing control of the match as he let several flare-ups go unpunished, his below par performance was highlighted on 71 minutes when he stopped play for a free kick, with the ball at Jones feet, Hook went two footed into the sub and brought him crashing down to the muddy ground. Much to the amazement of the crowd of 122, the ref didn’t send off the defender but let him off with a booking, then booked Jones as well! The young Red sub was to have the final laugh on 79 minutes when Dynamo’s Tate deflected his free kick past Baldwin.

Reds line up; Vaughan, Colwell, Whitcombe, Curran, Creighton, Slater, Webb, Myers, Quilt, Edwards, Colcombe. Subs; Jones, Tyrell, Smith, McGhee, Chambers.

On Tuesday Willenhall re-visit Eastwood who took more of the FA Trophy First Round ‘shock’ honours with victory over Nationwide North outfit Worksop Town at Coronation Park. The Badgers, struggling in the league and forced to play a number of youngsters again, scored the only goal of the game through Gould with just 6 minute remaining.

It will be the third meeting this season for the two sides and the Reds will be looking to repeat their two wins there.

Next Saturday the visitors to Noose Lane will be Woodley Sports for a league game.
