TSUNAMI !!

Recommended Posts

It is now being described as possibly the worst natural disaster this world has know !

Lord Dickie Attenborough has lost a daughter and a grand-daughter !

Britain originally pledged half a million pounds in aid, which was suddenly increased to £1.1 million by Big Tone Bliar when the seriousness of the situation became more apparent.

We are now being told we are 'cheap-skates' in light of Saudi Arabia's immediate pledge of £5 million !

Bearing in mind the amount of money we pour into the European Slush fund every year, I would have thought at least £5 million would be a mere drop in the ocean to us !

Starts to bring things into perspective a bit, don't it ??

Ironically if those countries affected had spent a fraction of the money being raised in aid on a Tsunami warning system this tragedy might have been averted, or dramatically reduced. As Tsunami's are rare in that part of the world it was not thought financially viable!

Hawaii and Japan have good systems in place, but these were only adopted after a similar tragedies.

I heard earlier that the British Govt has now pledged £15M, joint 2nd biggest donors with Japan behind the USA (£18M, but still only a drop in the ocean to them !)

The $35 million was the WHOLE AMOUNT of the International Disaster Relief Fund, put aside for all disasters for the year. The President has to go to Congress to ask for more money, and like Britain it is the holidays here. Expect more when Congress re-convene.
As my earlier post ,if these countries had spent some of THEIR own money on a warning system things might not have been so bad!

I'm now waiting for the religious fundamentalists to start the old....

"It's God's warning for the world to behave itself...." [color:"black"] nonsense.

Incidently, 'Er Indoors found some interesting extracts on the Web from 'The Book Of Revelations', (Bible), which now ring very true.

Anybody checked on Nostradamus, yet ???

We all worry about WMD, and nature just shows us how powerful she is in her own right !!

I may not always agree with what you say, but I'll defend to my dying day, the right for you to say it !

Not a lot of countries in the world where you can do that !

No, there's plenty of current running through the towns.

This week is Indonesian hygiene week. Thousands will be washing up on the beach.

Why are so many sharks stricken with diarrhea?

They've been eating Thai food all week.

What did the racist beachfront hotel owner say while standing at the registration desk?

Nobody likes to see people killed en- mass.......But Asia is vastly overpopulated, and Nature has a funny way of taking care of itself!

From doing Geography, I believe this could be seen as one of Thomas Malthus' 'natural checks' (war, famine, natural disasters) which affect the spiralling population levels (for those who believe in that). In the end, the population is supposed to level out (I think at something like 12 billion) and then eventually fall as the percentage of 'older' people in the world rises higher than that of 'younger' people. Interesting stuff.

You learn something every day ! I'll have to look him up.

As I said, Mother nature has a funny way of showing her power.

Two subterranean plates move fractionally, and look what happens !

Just imagine a massive move.

Thankfully, he and his wife are safe !

His press quote says he yelled at her as the wave approached, "Get Up That F*ckin' Tree !!!"
