Best ever Fleet XI

What's going on with this competition? The programme for the Scarborough home game states that entries have to be in by 28th March (i.e. our next home game), yet the forms were supposed to be handed out at the turnstiles and, as far as I know, this hasn't happened yet. Obviously, with no home games between now and Forest Green, there is no opporunity to hand out the forms to allow them to be returned in time for the original closing date. I can only assume the whole thing has been put back, but if anyone could shed any light on the matter, it would be much appreciated.

P.S. Anyone willing to give me a lift down to Dover tomorrow? I live in Riverview, although wouldn't mind being picked up elsewhere.

There is no need to be sarcastic Dave. It was a perfectly reasonable question from jc. Can't people especially moderators/administrators post polite replies any longer? All I can say is that there couldn't have been many entry sheets available then. I have been wanting to participate in this since it was first mentioned. None of the people I stand with got one either. How many were in fact distributed? I can't see that the outcome is going to be that authoritative if only a minority of fans have had the chance to participate. And there were no tannoy announcements about this either.

A rather disgruntled kmj.

Also, how is it going to be judged/scored?... I heard it was two Fleet fans with over 80 years supporting exerience who will be calling the best XI, surely this is very subjectional, should be done on an avergae basis with the winner being the one who picked XI off the most listed players?... Or is this how it will be scored?...

Not that I'm taking part, admittedly I know bugger all about bygone years of GNFC..!

I'm young, I don't remember them.

Did they play for England....?

Has Jimmy Bullard got a chance?

And does Bill Nicholson count? He played for Northfleet United, didn't he? Or was at least a youngster there...

But as its the best ever Fleet XI surely performances after/before they played for the Fleet are immaterial.

It is practically impossible to compare players of different eras and likewise it is very difficult to rate someone like Mark Bentley (who was excellent for the one season he played) against Stevie Brown (legend).

That said, anyone who doesn't pick Wolfie is a w*nk*r

Having only two categories of voters (under and over 25s)is unbalanced and would lead to a number of the earlier players being omitted from the over 25s group choices. For example you refer to Jimmy Logie who you will not have seen play yourself despite being in the oldest group. I would have liked the panel to consider my 11 ( I assume that it is one player per position rather than, say, 8 favourite forwards ), but of course I didn't get an entry form. Having spent a good 2 hours plus researching my final 11, I am rather miffed. Is anyone on the Forum actually entering this?

Not necessarily. Don't forget we have had players of the quality of Jimmy logie, Lee Smelt and Damian Richardson grace the red shirt. All have been full internationals or played in the Senior Division of the footy league.

Damien Richardson!! Apart from the game when he got all four goals ( AP Leamington ?) he did bugger all in a fleet shirt.

I wouldn't take it too seriously, folks. As everyone quite rightly says it is completely subjective.

I was lucky enough to see Richardson play his few games for Fleet - at this level he was simply stunning. Able to hit pinpoint 50 yard passes with ease. (compared to our midfielders these days who have trouble finding ANY red shirted player).

And if you thought Bunce was scary, you obviously never saw Kenny Burrett play.

Portway was just a goal machine.

Woolfie had a body swerve that sent the crowd the wrong way.

Brownie would beat 5 players, score a stunning goal then get himself sent off for swearing at the ref.

Legends one and all.

I suppose the best thing would have been to do it by time : pre 1970, 1970 - 1990 and 1990 to present.

That would have given a fairer chance for all age groups.

I remember the time when DR and an opposition player were being lectured by the ref who looked away for one second and DR kicked the other bloke in the shin who hopped about complaining to a disbelieving ref! Classic - nearly as good as K Sir Kenny Burrett standing on an opposing defender after a crowded corner in the `78 SL Cup run.

Can't remember if he was any good, I just remember the chants every time he touched the ball.

What a really nice bloke he was. Remember after his Fleet days were over he came to watch us play on strategic occasions like Orient.

What about a "Worst ever Fleet XI" too? Rule would have to be no current players - none would qualify anyway. And then theres a Hardest XI.. this is gonna be fun.

I remember one match when Basil was on the subs bench, as the match went on the chants of 'Basil Basil' got louder and louder, sure enough Basil got off the bench and started warming up on the touchline, now everyone was joining in 'Basil Basil' and Basil turned to his admiring fans and waved....the chants turned instantly to 'sit down sit down'. Classic
