Enfield Debate

I come from almost the same stable as the legendary THM. I am still fiercely proud that I followed the E's home and away for 22 years and took in all the great trips from Barnsley to Scarborough (still a better come back than Liverpool's - thanks Carl)to Exeter to Bishop Auckland to Merthyr (both times that week)etc. etc and I know I am far alone.

I did my best after we lost Southbury and went to almost every game until the split. Unlike most of 'us' I decided that I could not follow Town but nor could I continue to devote the emotional effort into the soul destroying spectacle that we had become. It was not for me and I have not been to another game ( of any description ) since. I realise that many people have put their hearts and souls into maintaining both clubs and that rifts between certain personalities on both sides may run deep. Surely though we all 'Enfield'. We all shared the ignominy of Runcorn and the highs of Port Vale at home, Oreint away and the togetherness of 'that day' at Yeovil. It may be selfish but I still want my club back and i want to take my son to games like my Grandad and dad did before me. Why can we not bring the two clubs together under the name of 'Enfield FC'? That is who we all are at heart.

Steve .. if you read this I totally respect your views but I was the first to satnd up for you when the 'Horse was born'.

Hello Leftside

Longtime no speak. Unfortunately the days when the Horse was born are long gone. At the time I was just a vocal fan who was sadden/angered by what was happening to my club. Those days are long gone and I moved on. As I said previously there is only one team in Enfield now and that is ETFC. If I felt there was was room for a merger then I would be all in favour of it but I do not see any chance of that at this stage.

ETFC have started something great and my own dynasty; the junior horse; enjoys every minute of it.

I quite agree. I would never consider voting in favour of any merger that wasn't on our terms. And I am sure that there are EFC fans who would never vote in favour of any merger that wasn't on theirs. That's just the way it is and I do not bear them any grudge over that or the fact that they stuck with Lazarou when we formed the new club. Our club is a mutually owned company and I would not want to give that up now that we have got it.

Cylops we stuck with "Enfield F C" Not with "lazarou", we wanted shot of him just as much as the rest of you did .He ran the club into the ground to stop you lot from taking it over He with Terry Back made Enfield F C into a laughing stock. We bear Enfield Town no malice what so ever we just want to keep the club alive in its current form.

The only club Town will merge with is Brimsdown Rovers cyclops Its more a possibility than us mate.

'He ran the club into the ground to stop you lot from taking it over'

Hang on a minute, PE. Laz was all ready to hand over the club, but as ever had a change of mind at the last minute. I think he'd even had the documents drawn up. Typical behaviour. I wonder what he was on? Anyway, that wasn't about anybody doing anything other than trying to keep the club alive. I'd have thought you'd have been desperate for anybody to take over at that point.

Anyway, if he'd done what he said he was going to do history may have been different. Although, it may not have been as repayment of the debts he'd run up would probably have been unsustainable without a white knight.

I'll say one thing for laz even though the assetts were completely stripped away ,He did leave Enfield F C resonably debt free,Half of the annual rent owed to borhamwood was the only thing outstanding that I know of(When we got suspended). Of course the playing staff were all but gone by then thanks to Terry Back. The youngsters were thrown in and relegation was unavoidable. As for a white knight we have 4/5 of those and fantastic sponsors .The old days of laz are over an image we want rid of.

No, that's still not right. At least EFC Holdings was wound up, because it was awash with debt. I'm still not clear on what basis the club was allowed to continue to trade while insolvent. But it has and survived. That's good news.

But, one of the main planks of the ETFC argument has always been that if the new club hadn't been formed none of that would have happened, he'd still be there or [more likely] the club would have gone bust long ago.

How can someone praise Laz for leaving the club debt free ??? What about asset-free.The £1.75 million that dissapeared after he sold the ground, the £75,000 the club received from the Underwood/Marshall transfers..etc

Dont forget the money from Leicester, Chesterfield and PNE.

I wasn't praising laz at all sorry it come across that way .we were just glad to be rid of him. The club has new owners and I'm sure that you'd agree that things are getting better.

It can actually be quite difficult to prove that any company is trading while insolvent. Look at MG-Rover. The fact that someone states they have funds and are prepared to keep the company going, especially if they have a prospective purchaser on the horizon, is usually enough. It is one of those situations where companies are given the benefit of the doubt. After all, if you said that every company had to trade at a profit, which is the only way you could have a black & white answer to the issue, then there would be no football clubs left unless the funding company or individual had to put in the money up front, which they can't always do.

I definitely agree with both those sentiments. Ironically, if we'd formed ETFC earlier, perhaps EFC would be in a better state now.

A big FOUR posts.<img src="/forum/images/graemlins/applaus.gif" alt="" />

What worries do Town have?? In the long term, EFC need a merger more than Town do

,but I fear the 'merger boat' has more than likely sailed.I won't lose any sleep over it.I know that an olive branch was offered in the past by my club, thats good enough for me.

Onwards and upwards !

One day he might even know everyones reason for the break away, rather than forcing his own on people he doesn't know.

I've been off the forums for a while but couldn't let all this pass by without a comment.

I agree with what lovely stuff and others have been saying - there's a lot us Town fans that would love to see the 2 clubs back as one but not on any terms, they would have to be right and in the spirit of why ETFC was formed in the first place. Equally, there are others on both sides, I know, who don't want this to happen on any terms so I don't think a merger is likely. I'm happy to be supporting what I consider to be the most viable of the 2 clubs at the moment given the size of the clubs' fan bases. What has been achieved at ETFC since formation is nothing short of remarkable and is down to the hard work and investment, both time and money, of many individuals - you know who you are and some of us are just proud as supporters to be involved in a club like that.

I actually stayed on watching EFC regularly for one more season than most Town supporters (whilst also attending many Town games in that first season when they didn't clash with EFC games). The sort of things that Steph refers to earlier particularly resonate with me - that season was heartbreaking in seeing the soul quite literally ripped out of what was once a great club. It got to the stage where I just didn't enjoy travelling to Boreham Wood every week any more to see what didn't feel anything like my club and a standard of football that was truly dreadful - ETFC offered a home where the pride was well and truly put back into football in the borough.

I also think that those who have rescued EFC, on meagre gates, deserve a lot of praise and I think we're all looking forward to letting battle commence on the football pitch this year. Roll on the start of this season......!!!
