Braintree City's got a nice ring to it ...

Theres a Braintree City in Massachusets, I remember the yanks walking around the town with their flashy cameras, saying wow at every 'run of the mill'. pre-war building.

Colchester claims to be a city. It was the Romans capital of Britain and the latin title bestowed on the town loosely converts to city. When as part of the 2000 celebrations the Queen announced applications were being requested from towns wishing to be elevated to city status, Chelmsford, Colchester and Southend all applied and failed. Some councillors in Colchester argued they should got it alone and call themselves a City (Like CCFC already try to) regardless of a Royal decree. I agree with that sentiment particularly when there are such obscure places as St Davids in Wales which has City status purely on the whim of a mediaeval monarch.

"call themselves a City (Like CCFC already try to)"

Its a name ffs. does that mean that everyone in wolverhampton are wanderers or everyone in shepherds bush are park rangers !!!

county town - decent town centre. plenty of decent pubs and very soon a football team back where it belongs - job done

Everyone knows Wolverhampton Wanderers is a name but Town or City attached to a club means the status of the place they're from. Swansea used to be called Swansea town, then when the Queen made Charles Prince of Wales she gave Swansea City status - just a little gift that cost her nowt! but no doubt the townsfolk of Swansea were chuffed. The football club clearly were, so they changed their name to City.

As I understand it in the 1920's when the Bishop of London realised he had a whacking great diocese and couldn't get around his flock often enough the CofE Synod decided Essex should have its own Bish. Barking, Chelmsford and Colchester were all in the running but Chelmsford was chosen for its central location. The parish church was re-named a Cathedral. If you've ever wondered why such a non-descript church is known as a Cathedral you do now.

About this time the football club were getting all presumptious in assuming this would result in the King bestowing Chelmsford with City status and it never happened.

Incidentally Brentwood also has a Cathedral and Bishop albeit RC, but I don't see Brentwood Town assuming the name City.

Talking about Wolverhampton, well its an irony but they could in fact call themselves City, because while Chelmsford were failing in their bid for City status in 2000 Wolves actually got it along with Brighton and Inverness.
