While the extension of the pitch is bedding in, we've already got permission from both Isthmian Gestapo HQ and those nice people in the Conference to play with a three sided ground, while we build the new Quag.

With the support you lot get, surely you only need a one-sided ground anyway!

Good to see you've checked everything with the Conference already. <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

Tis true young Ryan. We are but a small club. Barely breaking 500 for a league game. I wish we could cram them in like you do!

As for the Conference, providing details of proposed future developments was a requirement of our ground grading inspection and I'm sure it's the same for your club.

Unless, of course, you've not applied ...

Its becoming a bit of a paradox that one, the home sides support go missing when Ricay visit I wonder why Heybridge should find a fixture with Billericay less attractive than they did with the visits of Hendon and Harrow? I see Braintrees gates are closing in on Ricays and we still haven't played Chelmsford. Or got Basildon and Brentwood 5 miles away. Being the most northerly club in the Ryman will also limit the size of away support at Irons home matches. I reckon all things considered, we do better than Billericay.

The Canvey match was also a semi-reserve match by both teams a fact well known before-hand.

Was it? Bloody hell, don't tell the people who turned up, they'll be demanding their money back.

Yeah I want my money back!!!

You're right Ozbrit, Braintree crowds are on the up. Although I may say, given the success you've had so far (ie FA Cup 1st Round, excellent league results), and given the success you are about to see (ie Winners or runners-up in the league), I'd say an average gate of 408 so far is a little disappointing. After all, Braintree has a decent sized and expanding population. What do you think Braintree will average come the end of the season, 700/750?

I doubt it Ryan, I think they'll be under 500 at the end of the season regardless of our final position. Thats no shame, Braintree have over the years been above average in the Rymans gates stakes but admittedly not as good as yours.

While on crowd potential particularly for Gazza I'll drop the rose tinted specs a sec and expand on the point I was making. I estimate Billericay has about 160000 people living within 5 miles of Sun corner (thats most of Basildon plus Hutton, Shenfield and Wickford), by comparison Braintree is not surrounded by other Urban populations so in a catchment area of the same size I estimate the population as being 60000. Billericay is closer to most other Ryman league clubs and while its hard to put a definitive figure on it, I fancy Ricays average gate vs those at Cressing Road would benefit by 10 or 20 on this alone. Then of course, there's the free entry for kids, which I personally think is a very good policy, but once again it must have a positive affect to the published attendance figures.

When all things are considered one doesn't need to be a genius to realise why Billericay do get bigger gates than Braintree, just as I expect Chelmsford will do better than both of us when they're located in their 100,000 plus town.

As you go higher higher up the pyramid a club can expect to pull more in and from a wider area. Grays are proving that, they had abysmal support in the Ryman a couple of seasons ago. I've also been told that Rushdens attendances in their Southern league Midland section days were very poor then along came the Dr Martens sponsorship era and thousands from far and wide clamoured to be associated with the club which says a lot really.
