Hornchurch 4 Arlesey Town 3

Played under awful conditions this exciting game could have gone either way, but we just finished up on top to go second in the table.

Arlesey were quick off the blocks and took the lead after 7 minutes through Marvin Sammuel, stabbing home from a flicked on corner. 8 minutes later we equalised after a long clearance from Nick McDonald bounced over keeper Martyn Patching and was put away by Steve Jones. Arlesey though regained the lead just before half time when Justin Griffiths glanced a header into the far corner.

Within 10 minutes of the restart we were 3-2 up. The first was an amazing goal from Barrie Fox, his high ball into the area from the touchline fooling substitute keeper Matthew Cope and dipping in under the bar. Fox was involved in the 3rd as well, sending in a cross for Andrew Martin who stooped to head the ball under Cope. Arlesey wouldn't lie down though and Craig Reynolds equalised through a perfectly struck free kick with 15 minutes left. The winner came two minutes later with Steve Jones converting a penalty after being brought down by Cope. Arlesey piled on the pressure towards the end but some at time desperate defending denied them another equaliser.

Line-up:- Wood, McGowan, Bates, McDonald, Marsden, Fox, Cowley (Benstock 82), Jopson, Jones (Cripps 90), Martin, Locke (Lowery 90+). Subs not used:- Rothon, Collier (GK).

good result in a very important game as it turned out, good crowd of 219 in spite of the weather and generally a good bunch of visitors (apart from the three or four drunks outside the urchins bar effing and jeffing in front of the urchinettes, still there's always a few, they went pretty quite towards the end though) two behind the leaders, two games in hand and generally a pattern beginning to emerge, my view is that you can draw a line under the top ten and find the promotion duo there, we'll see....We missed rizzo today, badly and he looks out for a few months...good to see wee man back..he's a tonic. The game was far from a classic but for excitement you couldn't top it. Good to see jonah back to winning spot kicks, fair play to him as well after missing the last one, he was getting plenty of stick from the Arlesey players just before he took it, class shines through in the end. Nice one stevie, you know how to shut em up..score goals. Ref seemed to lose things in the second half, but in truth he could quite easily have given the visitors a penalty so we can't complain. Luck evens itself out over a season anyway. Well done to all, great result. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/beerchug.gif" alt="" />
