So the two trials in the last week we see The geeky twin brothers and their friend get light sentences of just 9 years each for murdering their own grandmother . The week before we see a group of happy slappers who kicked an innocent man to death just to photo their dispicable lust .Just twelve years each handed out for this scum and 8 years for the girl with the camera/phone.You can bet your A*SE that this lot of scum will be out on the streets in 5 years You can see why they do it as their is no deterrant. THE ONLY WAY FORWARD IS TO REINTRODUCE a lengh of rope and a trap door. I dont know what the majority of decent people think But I've had enough of all this pussy footing about .I would gladly pull the trap door lever myself if it would clean up the scum elements that now live amounst us.

You're not overly concerned about miscarriages of justice then, which in the case of capital punishment carry a sentence that cannot be reversed?
In this day and age where forensic science can prove without any shadow of a doubt who the murderous scum are then NO .....stretch their worthless necks and have done with it. And I dare say some christian type will tell me they dont believe in the death penalty..... They never do until one of their own gets it.

DNA profiles can prove beyond a shadow of a doubt, maybe, but you have to have a DNA sample to work with first. Forensic science is by no means foolproof.

DNA samples are not 100% I.E. if an individual has had a marrow transplant or in some cases a blood transplant you can achieve a change in DNA reading? lets remember that when discovered and first used fingerprints were believed to be 100%, finding fingerprints at the scene of a crime is now a much less damning piece of evidence

I still believe it to be the Vicar in the library with a hammer

DNA evidence cannot prove that anyone committed a crime. It can place a suspect at the scene of the crime or at least some fibres or tissue belonging to the suspect at the scene. Or in the alternative there could be evidence that the victim was in contact with suspect. This is no way proves that 1) an offence took place or 2) there is not some other explanation for the sample's presence. Nothing is black and white which is why the criminal justice system has so many checks and balances in place in an effort to prevent and correct miscarriages of justice. Capital punishment would be a massive step in the wrong direction.

Quite correct Martin. DNA extracted from a sample (assuming that a sample is available) can show a very high likelihood (not 100%) of a match with another sample. Obviously you have to have a sample from your suspect as well. In the case of rape, this can demonstrate the identity of the perpetrator beyond reasonable doubt but as you say in many other cases it wil only demonstrate presence.

DNA samples are also very susceptible to contamination. It is certainly a powerful technique but not the magic be-all and end-all that people seem to think.

I believe all the plastic cards and counters in Cluedo share a common DNA, and therefore it could have been any of them in any of the rooms with any of the weapons.

Hang the lot of 'em, I say! Only way to be sure.
