Memories of Jacko

Recommended Posts

In honour of the great man, I feel it's only fair that we recall our favourite memories of Jacko in a Fleet shirt here. Here's some to start things off, in no particular order:

1) Being carried off on a stretcher at Telford after a 'challenge' by Jordan King, seemingly with a very serious injury, only to return and curl an absolute beauty of a shot into the top right hand corner from the edge of the box at home to Burton the following Saturday.

2) His long-range screamer at Halifax - so good that Akpo Sodje (not Jacko himself, the actual scorer) was booked for celebrating it.

3) Scoring at home to Northwich in the first game of 2004/2005 - our first goal of the season, and in his first competitive match after returning from Dagenham.

4) His fine brace of goals at home to Bishop's Stortford - particularly the superb volley for the second, which seemed to have won us the match in the last minute.

5) The curling free-kick goal in his 500th Fleet appearance, at home to Forest Green.

6) A fine low finish from about 15 yards away to Southport - a key equalizer in our close-to-relegation season of 2002/2003, in a game in which we were down to ten men.

7) His goal in the FA Cup against Colchester.

Any others? I gather he once scored a brilliant long-range goal in the KSC at home, which I was unofortunate to miss.

Difficult to remember isolated "special moments" as there were so many, always in big games, and always spectacular.

Probably as gutted as when Kenny Burrett retired and when Portway left.

And what a pity the fans never got a chance to say thank you and goodbye.

It's a shame that Jason and Mr Daish havn't organised a more fitting farewell.

All JJ got was :

"I am sad to see any player go but it is particularly the case with Jimmy Jackson as he is a ‘Fleet’ man through and through. I would have tried everything within my means to keep him had he been able to fit into daytime training but unfortunately he is unable to do this. On behalf of everyone connected with the club I would like to express my sincere thanks to ‘Jacko’ for everything that he has done for the club, he is a consummate professional and has been a great ambassador for Kent football over a long period of time - we wish him every success for the future”.

That tribute falls way short of what I expected from the club for an all time legend.

It would be a great gesture and restore the respect of the fans if the club organised a "proper" farewell for Skins and Jacko.

Suggest LD pulls some of his strings and gets a Premiership team down pre season for them both.

If York can get Middlesborough, we can get someone like Spurs or Arsenal..

On a non scoring note, what about the away match at daggenham, prior to his return, when all the fleet fans under the covered area were singing we want our jimmy back.... and he looked up at us all with a grin the size of the dartford tunnel...

Big stage? His big night was played out in front of a pitiful attendance of 706. <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />

I also remember him scoring a cracking goal from the edge of the penalty area at the Swanscombe end in his own testimonial game v a Charlton X1. He turned on a sixpence and fired the ball into the top of the net. In no way was this contrived in what was a very competitive game for a friendly.

The "Big stage" of course refers to the night of his 500th appearance.

Best Jacko moment for me has to have been away to Croydon, on a miserable rainy night in mid-September 2001.

Jacko sees their keeper off his line and chips him from just inside our own half.We hung on to win 4-3.

Best Jacko moment for me was during 2003/4 (The Daggers season) seeing him standing on the terraces at Stonebridge road cheering the boys on and thinking to myself 'You'll be back'.

Favourite singular moment must be his second againt Bishops Stortford at the Stadio del Stonebridgio...

On more general notes - enjoying the anticipation of free kicks with Jacko standing over the ball, 'walking in a Jacko wonderland', his 100s of assists and his many goals, his eternal willingness to applaud our fans after away games; the list is endless...

Does no-one remember that great shot that put us one up at Canvey in the promotion season?

And I recall a fantastic 30-yard scorcher at Croydon years back too.

Oops - given the importance of that goal, I can't believe I left it off the list. I knew there was something I'd forgotten.
