What did we all have for dinner today?

Recommended Posts

Wow. Sounds like everyone had something great. We took the lazy route and picked up sandwiches from Subway. It was hubby and the brother's idea, but if it meant I didn't have to cook, I was all for it. Normally, I love cooking, but an occasional chance to be out of the kitchen suits me too.

Of course it depends what you mean by "dinner". What you call your meals and when you take them betrays your background and perhaps, to an extent, your place of origin.

Yer average Joe or indeed Joanna used to have his/her dinner in the middle of the day, and go home for tea as an evening meal. Hence school dinners, dinner ladies etc.

Posher types had lunch, and dinner in the evening. Dead posh ones partook of luncheon and had tea around 4pm, and nevber had dinner. They had supper.

Here, at least in this part of Indiana, it is either dinner and supper, or lunch and dinner. Most people in this area are of German descent, and most of the older ones say dinner for the midday meal and supper for the evening.

I have gotten used to calling the evening meal 'tea' because of the other half. When I call it that while speaking to others (without thinking about it), I end up having to explain myself.
