The British military has launched a satelite communications system called Skynet. To provide secure communication between our armed forces that is subject to very low levels of interference. Jesus H Christ have these people not seen Terminator?

Given their recent (and not so recent) record, what are the chances of this British military satellite actually working?

Even if it does, what are the chances of their being enough receivers, or phones or whatever they are, being issued to the troops? And actually working, in sand/snow/dust (anything but Salisbury Plain!)

You know what they say - British forces are the best trained and worst equipped in the world.

That's very unBritish. We normally give things rubbish names like Beagle or Wallace, Gromit, Mildred or Cuthbert or something.

Skynet is far too fancy. Can't we rename it maybe 'Pipe' or 'Slipper'...?

I agree. Understatement is a very British quality. (The Spitfire was originally going to be called the Shrew, you know).

We used to have "operations" (ops) or "sorties" until we had the copy our transatlantic cousins and call them "missions". I ask you.

A classic British thing to do would be to call it "British Military Communications Satellite No. 1." That'd do for me.

Leave all this fancy Thunderbird Powerblaster Fireball Skyraider nonsense to the former colonials.

The Yanks love a good operation name. Desert Storm, Uphold Democracy, Enduring Freedom, Iraqi Freedom, Vigilant Resolve, Kicking Ass, MidEast Annihilation, etc.

We have Goodwood, Market Garden, Varsity, Shingle, Granby and Daffodil. grin
