Well then Matthew, do you realise that you have the chance to see two more Ilford v ETFC matches next month, as we are drawn against each other in the semi-finals of the Gordon Brasted Memorial Trophy?

Ilford are at home on Sat:1/Mar, and the ETFC game is on Sat:29/Mar. Hope to see you at either/both these games!!!!!

Well yes, sometimes I do inadvertently manifest myself. I think the bread pudding affects my special powers.

Actually I do recall Matthew saying he had been to his first Ilford game... any more since?

The annoying thing is I am going to miss BOTH of the Ilford GBMT semis, so I will miss out on the pleasure of meeting Matthew, if he's there.

I have never heard of the Senior League "turning" down an application for promotion , normally it would have to be the Ryman itself, if they consider that the club do not meet their criteria - remember it is a Grade "B" ground now with entry at Div 1 North level. The other scenario is a club withdrawing their application when they cannot meet the April 1st deadline or not attaining first/ second place in the League table. But here is food for thought - what on earth happens if the Conference get their way with the FA , it will certainly affect the Ryman League as the Doc Martens seem to have back-tracked on geographical changes - according to the NLP. So, would there be any advantage in going to the Ryman Div 1 or Doc Martens at this stage - of time . As I sit here in my Essex hideway I consider the fact - who WILL go up, when and to where and is it all worth it ? This will run and run.

The Invisible Man is right again, but it shouldn't really come as much surprise. Personally I think we need more localised leagues near the top of the pyramid, for example at present it is theoretically possible that both Penzance & Great Yarmouth could play each other in the DM Prem, should they reach that level. How on earth can anybody claim that is a regional division? The Ryman League is a model of how a feeder league to the Conference could work- what if there were 5/6 regional leagues which fed into a north and south division at the same level that the conference is at now.You could have Unibond,a Midland league, an Eastern/East Mids, a Western, the Ryman and the Doc Martens. Then the clubs would have far less travelling and could concentrate funds towards players and grounds. On 2nd thoughts perhaps not players.

Good Lord no, man, that would be far too sensible. What on earth are you thinking of, we can't have any sense in football can we?

The restructuring worked out by the DML and Ryman, known as Option D, went a small way towards this, by swapping clubs about between the two on a more sensible geographical basis rather than the ad hoc historical set up at present. They only did this becasue they could see it would be forced on them by the FA.

Presumably the DML has welched on this agreement now because it foresees the Conference muscling its Div 1 N and S proposals through and wants to retain its status as a feeder league, understandably enough.

So if the Ryman, or Rymond as Matthew puts it, loses feeder status, and loses over half its Premier clubs to the new Conference Div 1 South, what is left? Will all its remaining member clubs apply to defect to the DML? And the leagues feeding into the Ryman - will they be re-aligned to feed into the DML? Or wwill the Ryman be ranked alongside the county leagues and itself feed into the DML?

Only time will tell!

Assuming that there will still be a Ryman league 1 North still to move up to as and when. Has Matthew considered that you have to finish towards the top of the ESL at the end of the season to qualify.

I ask this because of recent results e.g

Sawbo 1. Ilford 0

Ilford 1 Concord 3

dont really indicate that his beloved Cricklefielders will necessarily be well enough placed to have a chance.

On a downward spiral by the look of it having peaked and had their 15 minutes of fame.

So dont count your chickens Mr Oliver!
