Tuesday 8 April
Premier Division
Shefford Town & Campton 5 Winslow United 2

A groundhopper from another Forum was in attendance at the Shefford Sports Club:

Spartan South Midlands Premier - Shefford Sports Fields - new tick - Shefford Town & Campton 5(3) Winslow United 2(2) - Admission: £8, Paper on-line, Attendance: 79 (official).
Having trekked across to Corby for the middle lad to pick up his Cinch purchase, I then shuttled across and down to a small town SE of Bedford. Plenty of parking at a really very nice, but basic venue which, sadly, after 3 years will no longer entertain at Step 5. Very rural in aspect, with a cracking Clubhouse at the E end (single-storey brick, with a verandah/terrace and a canvas cover), two gently sloping grassy ends. Small 50-seater Arena stand and an even smaller Arena standing shelter to the S and the N side has all the dug-outs and the embankment of the long-closed Bedford-Hitchin railway line (1962).
Bottom hosting 11th; I was expecting a low-scoring affair. Town had averaged just over a goal-a-game all season and, whilst I saw United at the start of the season at their ground and they looked really impressive then, seem to have had a very indifferent season. So, seven goals was a pleasant surprise. This did not mask the fact that it was the very worst Step 5 game this season of the 21 I have witnessed.
Awful, clogging football (for the most part). 22 petulant, whingeing players with a high-pitched bellowing at every tackle and no end of backchat to officials; a couple of players probably deserved a Red for persistent infringement. Colossal amounts of time-wasting by the home side once they led. And two benches who didn't help, loudly coruscating officials. But...
The result, whilst a shock, was a good one for the home side; helped by poor defending from United overall. As early as 8', Town led after United just couldn't clear a corner, the ball being lashed in. On 22' Town increased that lead with the best team goal of the game; a persistent drive down the left and a good cut-in and the ball layed across perfectly for a tap-in. United made the home keeper busy, but just seemed to use the wrong options when around the box. They got a goal back on 41' with some head ping-pong from a corner resulting in a far-post finish. Just as you thought they had got back in the game, an early cross swung towards the penalty spot saw the United keeper fatally miss his attempt to claim the ball, which was headed into an empty net on 45+3'.
Second half, United played a high line and suffered for it. When a proper game of football occasionally broke out, the speedy front three for Town turned the United backline frequently and they were rewarded with breakaway finishes one-on-one on 66' and 88'. United offered nothing.
A nice, quiet drive back x-country in 150'.

I heard on the grapevine that Long Buckby AFC have resigned from the SSML so will they just 'roll over' this evening against a rejuvenated Buckingham FC under 'Prodigal Son' Scott Reynolds:
