BRENTWOOD TOWN 2 CONCORD RANGERS 1

This game eventually took place despite doubts about the pitch almost up to kick off time and a delayed start when a replacement referee had to be found.

The game finally kicked off 48 minutes late on a heavy but well-grassed pitch which stood up better than some had feared.

Much of the early part of the first half was spent in the Concord half but the visitors created the two best chances with Ryan Sammons shooting just past the post and Danny Heale forcing a good save from Mark Hardingham.

Brentwood then broke out through Michael Begg but his cross was hit over the bar by Carl Griffiths.

The speedy Begg was involved in most of Blues’ best moves and, after exchanging passes with Nick Cowley, he created another chance for Griffiths, but this time Rangers keeper Grant Lee saved well to deny the league’s top scorer.

Brentwood took the lead in the 34th minute. Begg hit an accurate pass in to the edge of the penalty area and Danny Carroll played a one-two with Griffiths before slotting past Lee into the far corner.

Cowley, Begg and Donovan Wilson all had shots on target in the second half as Brentwood looked to extend their lead, but their rhythm was disturbed by injuries to Steve King and Carroll who both had to be replaced.

Concord still posed a threat when they attacked and Heale saw a good effort just miss the top corner of the net, and they began to put Brentwood under some pressure in the closing stages.

However, no one expected such a dramatic finish to the game which saw two goals in injury time. Ollie Baker equalised for Concord in the 91st minute only for Tommy Lee, an 86th minute substitute for Griffiths, to grab a winner for Blues moments later, tapping in another Begg right wing cross at the far post.

Brentwood were grateful for the slender lead that they will take to Canvey for the 2nd leg on 13th January.

Brentwood Town: Mark Hardingham, Steven King (Riki Holmes 70), Kevin Marsden, James Davies, Craig Dennis, Steven Dickenson, Donovan Wilson, Nick Cowley, Michael Begg, Carl Griffiths (Tommy Lee 86), Daniel Carroll (Hussein Isa 60)
