FF News
Premier League official Michael Oliver is to referee a friendly between Ebac Northern League club Ashington and Newcastle United Under 23s. Ashington-born Oliver has confirmed his availability for the game, as both sides finalise their preparations for the new season. Peter Beardsley will take his young Magpies to Woodhorn Lane on Tuesday 1st August, twelve months after the two sides met at the same venue. On that occasion the Colliers won with the only goal of the game scored by striker Ben Harmison, brother of joint-manager Steve. Ahead of the game new Colliers joint-manager Tom Wade praised Oliver's officiating. Speaking to the club's official website he said “Last season when I was manager at Blyth Spartans, Michael refereed us in a Techflow Group Northumberland Senior Cup clash and we didn’t notice he was on the pitch because he allows the match to flow. "His game management is fantastic. “Everybody is looking forward to it. “There are a lot of Newcastle United supporters up here and to meet them at any level is a boost for our squad. Also our younger players can put a marker down and think “can I achieve the same as the Newcastle lads?” Article: Mark Carruthers (@marknldaily)Image: Reuters Media Source
