What the heck is happening at Boreham Wood FC.

Recommended Posts

I've just been informed as follows.....

Fans Favourite Steve Cook Is Sacked.

A bombshell was dropped in the wake of Borehamwood’s memorable victory away at AFC Wimbledon with the news that popular manager Steve Cook had been relieved of his duties. The news was delivered personally the following morning from club owner Danny Hunter.

Cook had served the club for two and a half years, the longest managerial reign under Mr Hunter’s ownership. Having previously managed at Baldock Town and St Alban’s City, he was appointed manager at the start of the 2005-2006 season.

His career statistics at Wood are highly impressive, winning 79 games, drawing 31 and losing 34. However 16 of those losses have occurred this season, which has undoubtedly led to the decision. The recent addition of Ollie Adedeji, Steve Wales and loan signing Leon Archer looked to have turned his fortunes around, with a narrow defeat against a very strong Margate side, followed by the memorable win at Kingsmeadow, although the decision to relieve Cook of his duties had already been made.

There is no doubting that Cook has been by far the most successful manager at the club under Danny Hunter. In his first season in charge he took the side to a League title and back to the Ryman Premier League, the highest standard at which the club has competed. More creditable however was the record breaking run to the Semi-Final of the F A Trophy, which will remain engraved in the memories of all Wood fans forever.

He also guided the side to the final of the Herts Charity Cup, utilising a blend of youth and experience along route, in keeping with the home grown ethos that is prevalent at Meadow Park.

Last season he narrowly failed to reach the Premier Division play-offs with his side finishing a creditable seventh.

Mr Cook spoke as ever candidly and philosophically upon hearing the news, in particular wishing to publicly convey his heartfelt thanks to the fans and players of Borehamwood Football Club.

“ I would like to thank the Wood supporters who have remained loyal to me throughout thick and thin. I have never once received any abuse and I send them a massive thank you. My players have been fabulous throughout. They immediately accepted me when I joined the club and have never lacked commitment. Obviously they all carry a conscience over recent results and I know they are just as upset as I am.

I have done my best with what has been made available to me and their efforts will remain in my memory forever. I feel that I treated the senior and junior players equally whilst at the club.

It has not been an easy place to work at times but I do not bear any grudges.

I accept that in football that there are two types of managers. Those that get sacked and those that will get the sack. That said whoever inherits this squad is a very lucky person.”

Looking back on his time at Meadow Park, Cook spoke of his finest moments, “Obviously the run to the F A trophy Semi-Final did not just happen. We came very close to winning the competition as massive underdogs. The fact was that my players actually believed that they could win it. The victory at Worksop sticks in my mind as one of the greatest days, however I thought we were magnificent against Crawley Town, Gravesend and Northfleet and Bromley too. We absolutely destroyed some of those higher ranked teams on the afternoon. In the league victories against Chelmsford City in the last two seasons were particularly satisfying and I would like to think that I bought some attractive football to the town.”

Speaking of his last days in charge Cook added, “ I dedicate the victory against AFC Wimbledon to the fans. If you like it is my parting gift so I’ll leave that with you.”

Looking to the future Cook remained optimistic, “ I am not interested in putting myself about like a vulture. That is the side of football that I despise. I will certainly not be touting myself about. I plan to spend some quality time with my family initially. However I do not plan to spend too many Saturday’s out shopping with the wife as football is in my blood! I will maintain a full interest in what is happening and hope to return to thank the fans at some stage soon.”

I'm gutted and shell-shocked.
