"Enfield Town got their reward for fighting to the death this afternoon, scoring three goals in the last seven minutes to record an impressive 5-1 FA Trophy win away at Godalming Town.

Michael Deane stepped off the bench to score twice late on as the visitors from Middlesex ended up cruising into the next round.

Club Secretary Peter Coath admitted the late onslaught made for a 'flattering' 5-1 win - but the scoreline certainly reaped the dividend of battling right up until the final seconds of this match.

"It was a fairly even game but, of course, we are extremely pleased with this result ," Coath explained afterwards.

"We were confident we could win the game and although this scoreline may have flattered us, we were definitely worthy winners," he continued.

This victory makes it three wins on the bounce for Enfield and a performance which marks a side gathering momentum, according to Coath.

"The team is playing really well at the moment and this will be a massive boost for us," he said. "We have shown we have a very strong squad and this is a great result.

"Michael Deane is unlucky only to be a substitute really as he is probably as good as the players who are in the first team at the moment. Once again today, he has proved himself."

The North London side rode their luck and were made to play the waiting game today before running riot and booking their place in the next phase of the competition.

In an even and open first-half contest, it was the hosts Godalming who came closest to breaking the deadlock.

The home side saw a thunderous strike come back off the woodwork as they threatened to draw first blood in what proved to be an intense tie.

However, it was the visitors who forced the killer breakthrough on the stroke of half-time through Ellis Remy. He struck the ball neatly into the corner from the edge of the box shortly before the whistle, leaving Enfield with a spring in their step on the way back to the dressing room.

Godalming made two changes at the break to try and put a different complexion on the game, but it was Enfield who doubled their lead on 63 minutes courtesy of a Luke Marshall strike.

The goal did not deter the home side who struck back eight minutes from time to spark life into the tie once more.

But with Godalming showing clear signs of tiring, substitute striker Deane, keen to prove a point, soon wrapped up the win for Enfield.

He tapped in the visitors' third on 86 minutes before Remy hit his second in the first minute of stoppage time, racing through one-on-one with the Godalming keeper.

Enfield continued to cut their opponents to shreds as Deane completed his brace to secure an emphatic win.
