Citizens return to winning ways

Recommended Posts

The Citizens returned to winning ways at Herns Lane this afternoon, avenging their defeat by Aylesbury Vale just before Christmas with style.

With just 5 minutes gone the home team were one ahead, Stuart Blackburne set the ball for Jason Williams who crossed for Richard Morton to score his first goal since returning from injury a few short weeks ago. A few minutes later Fabio Valenti passed through to Stuart Blackburne who fired just wide.

The next half hour was attack and counter from both sides, Rob Blackburne made a great stop just past the half hour, his only real save of the whole game. At the other end a neat free kick fell to Valenti but he shot with his weaker right foot and sent the ball over the visitors goal. On 38 minutes Stuart Blackburne's header, from a Valenti corner, was finger tipped over by the visitors keeper.

Stuart had to be substituted at the start of the second half with a tight hamstring, Adam Wallace coming on in his place. In the opening minutes of the half another corner from Valenti was headed narrowly wide by the Citizens Captain Tom Lewis.

The impressive David Taylor hit the bar when he shot from outside the penalty area, then Wallace sent Williams away down the wing while the big man ran into the area to receive the ball back and crash it into goal.

With less than an hour gone Valenti and Morton combined to set up Wallace again but the visitors keeper made a great save to deny him his second. Lewis shot wide again and Mark Blackburne made a mazy run into the area shooting just over with 5 minutes left.

However, the action was not over and it was Valenti who set up Taylor, his shot hit the bar, but he was quickest to react and netted the rebound.

WGCFC: R Blackburne, M Blackburne, T Lewis (Deanus) Pilides, McKay, V Rispoli, Williams, Morton, S Blackburne (Wallace) Taylor.

OTHER SUBS: Kaphouris, Thompson

A great display of flowing football and a 3-0 score line should be enough for the Citizens to silence their critics for the time being.
