Rhodes
Saturday 9 October Wiltshire Senior Cup First Round 4 3 Westbury United v Wootton Bassett Town A report on this one from yesterday: Westbury United 4-3 Wootton Bassett Town Wiltshire Senior Cup 1st Round Admission: £4.50 Programme: £1 Tea: 50p (proper cup) Attendance: ~60 Easy enough to find the ground, though a potential word of warning for anyone going - there is due to be a closure of the B3098 for the next few weeks near Erlestoke. Liked the ground. Two stands, one seated on the half way line set back a bit, but thankfully the non-identical dugouts are quite far apart. The other is in one corner which has a random arrangement of tables, chairs and benches. Several more bench seats around all sides, including two single plastic seats screwed on to two tree stumps beside one goal. The clubhouse is in a long building with a corrugated iron exterior, which houses a bowling lane (covered up today) which features a manual tube for getting the balls back. Most things around the place painted in green. Although there is a turnstile, this was closed and all entry was via a hut at the entrance to the ground. Plenty of space to park inside. The game itself took a while to get going, and came very close to extra time. The hosts took five minutes to open the scoring, and had the balance of play before the break. No further score in the half, but was quickly 2-0 after the restart - best goal of the game, a 25 yard volley as many were still walking back from tea or beer. They then had a player sent off for a second booking (one for something he said, the second for retaliation). Still it was soon 3-0 from the spot. Ended up an exciting finish as the visitors pulled it back to 3-2, it was 4-2 on the break and 4-3 in injury time. Several good tackles and saves and a post rattled. The Westbury #10 has just arrived on loan and scored 5 in two games. He looked very good for this level.
Rhodes
A summary of the weekends action from the Non League Today website: http://www.nonleaguedaily.com/news/index.php?&newsmode=FULL&nid=70543 In the Uhlsport Hellenic League Premier Division on Saturday, Abingdon Town faced a rersurgent Carterton side but capitalised on two sendings-off winning by 4-1, thanks to Liam Barson, Marc Gass, Jake Howard and Dean Forbes - Dave Bostock hit the consolation goal for the visitors. League leaders Ardley United strengthened their position at the top after cruising past Wokingham & Emmbrook, hitting three without reply through Stuart Bridges (pictured), Lewis Travers and Danny Bone. Highworth Town won an entertaining fixture against a very strong Old Woodstock Town outfit by the odd goal in five. The Worthians made hard work of a game they controlled but came through courtesy of Tom Cole and a James Guthrie brace. Ben Thomas and Matt Brandish hit the back of the net for the visitors. Pegasus Juniors were given a 7-0 mauling by Ascot United. Queuing up for scoresheet duty for the Yellamen were Zak Spencer and Jon Bennett with a pair each, Tim Standing and Sam McIntyre, with an own goal completing the total. Shortwood United really are going through the wringer after losing yet again to a Jack Quainton strike midway through the first period for Oxfordshire visitors, Kidlington. Shrivenham were mugged in the last 5 minutes of their game against local rivals, Witney United. On target for the Blanketmen were John Steedman and Sam Wright. Lydney Town remain undefeated in the league after an entertaining 6-3 result against Easington Sports. On target for Lydney were Danny Clark, Glen Stallard, Matty Timmins, Niall Halford, Adam Price and Mark Lee and for the visitors, Greg Shawyer and Danny Reeves with a pair. Tytherington Rocks lost out to the improving Clanfield after Kevin Lewis hit the only goal of the game in the second period. Winterbourne United lost an entertaining encounter with Bicester Town, going down by the odd goal in five. Lennie Sackey gave the Foxhunters an early lead with two goals inside 10 minutes but Ben Dowdell and then Tam Kitgrave made up the difference. However, Roy Oxendale was on hand to settle the outcome hitting the back of the net in the 67th minute. In Division One East, Chalfont Wasps lost out to table-toppers Henley Town, conceding the only goal of the game when Martin Abery’s effort went in after 56 minutes. Chinnor were thrashed by visitors, Didcot Town Reserves, shipping half a dozen goals courtesy of Danny Cox, Alex Stanila, Glyn Jones, Josh McInnerny and Maurice Pereira with a brace - Richard Avery grabbed a consolation effort for the hosts. Finchampstead were no match for Hungerford Town Reserves, conceding four times without reply thanks to Gareth Brown, Jemel Johnson, Shaun Thorp and Luke Prestoe. Newbury won a close encounter with South Kilburn which saw Jason Peters and Harry Goodger with two, scoring for the Berkshire outfit and Scott Lewis and Dain Boothe replying for Kilburn. In the 'Bluefin'-Insurance Brokers Challenge Cup on Saturday, Premier side Bracknell Town were knocked out on penalties against One East’s Woodley Town. Danny Isaiew gave the visitors an early lead but Ben Knight equalised on half time. Rob Yorke-Goldney then put Bracknell into the lead in the first period of extra-time but Woodley were back in front after strikes from Adam Jeffery and Sam Cripps. Tom Nugent then equalised to ensure a penalty shoot-out. Cheltenham Saracens lost out to Milton United by the odd goal in five. Hitting the target for the Saras was Mike Rhodes with a pair and settling it for the men from the Heights were Ross Butler, Paul Sanders and an own goal. Farnborough Reserves took cup specialists Holyport into extra-time before losing by 5-2. Dan Bowden put the home side in front but Ryan Britnell equalized just before the break. Jamie Handscomb then had a purple patch in the extra period, claiming the match with a four-timer for the visitors, despite Luke King’s reply. Flackwell Heath and Thame United played out a goalless draw after extra-time but the spectators were treated to an exciting penalty shoot-out which saw the Heathens come through by 7-6. Division One West leaders Headington Amateurs made hard work of getting through against One East basement club, Penn & Tylers Green after Neil Lockhart’s only goal of the game after 2 minutes. Reading Town thrashed Fairford Town, hitting the net eight times without reply. Leading the turkey shoot were Luke Farrugia and Danny Seaward with a hat trick each and Adam Cashin-Murray with a pair.
