Wood duo sign new deals

Boreham Wood have secured the services of goalkeeper James Russell and midfielder Graeme Montgomery for another season, after the pair agreed new contracts with the club.

Russell who began his career at Chelsea as a scholar, then gained experience at Canvey Island upon his release. From Canvey he arrived at Meadow Park three seasons ago with a good reputation but from the league below. Through his outstanding performances and reliability, he has been a fixture in the side ever since.

Montgomery began his career at Wealdstone before joining the pro ranks with Dagenham and Redbridge. From there he went to Aldershot and then onto Eastleigh. In season 2011/12, manager Ian Allinson had the opportunity to sign ‘Monty’ and with his trademark spectacular goals a feature of his time at ‘the Wood’, it has proved an inspired signing.

Manager Ian Allinson said “Rusty (Russell) has been great for me and the team from the first day I signed him but since bringing in goalkeeping coach James Courtnage to work alongside James, he has improved even further. He can be his own worst critic at times but that’s just him and I trust him and so does his back four”.

Allinson went on “Monty (Montgomery) is a player with incredible natural ability, he can do things with a ball others can’t. He also scores goals that others only dream about and he does it in big games, year after year. He’s developed this year into a real team player and I’m very happy to have him on board with me again next season”.

Allinson concluded “Obviously nobody knows what going to happen in the next two or three weeks. The league is ridiculously tight but we’ve now achieved our first objective by making the play offs”.

“We’re not content with that though and we’ll be trying our best to achieve more… This squad has an incredible attitude, an incredible discipline and an incredible desire. Most important at this stage of the season is do we have the belief and we honestly think we can win it. It’s the best side I’ve ever managed and that’s perhaps because we all get on so well and they don’t step over the line. The players enjoy each other, they have each other’s backs, they work hard for each other and for me they’re a pleasure to manage”.
