Marine chairman Paul Leary is leading the club's fans on a sponsored walk to Skelmersdale United before they kick off in their Christmas Monday fixture in the Evo-Stik Northern Premier League's top flight.

To raise funds for the club's ongoing ground appeal, the Mariners are marching the 14 miles from the Marine Travel Arena to the West Lancashire College Stadium on Monday 28 December.

Officials announced on Friday that Leary and supporters will be setting off at 8am to make it in time for the 3pm kick-off to the festive fixture in the Evo-Stik NPL's Premier Division.

After fans funded the recent completion of a £12,500 new boardroom under their main stand, the proceeds from the winter walk will pay for the demolition of one of the old timber buildings to the front of the stadium in order to install new boundary fencing.

The two clubs drew 2-2 when they met earlier in the season at The Marine Travel Arena and Marine's chairman is inviting supporters to join him on the walk which is aiming to raise a minimum of £1000 to complete the next stage of stadium improvements.

Leary said: “This is another mighty effort by our amazing fans to help raise funds towards our ongoing plans to improve the stadium. The walk in wintry conditions will be a real tough task but as a group we will literally stick together to ensure we all arrive safely at Skelmersdale in time for the game.

"Fans of all ages are to take part in the walk, so again, as we did a few years ago, we will be wrapped up with plenty of hot drinks, food and football banter to see us through. Once again, I shall be wearing my walking boots and I look forward to joining our superb fans on what will be a fun but rather long and tiring day that hopefully ends with a great game of football.”

Donations can be made online at www.groundappeal.co.uk or sent directly to the club. Cheques should be made payable to 'Marine FC Ground Appeal' and posted to Richard Cross, 74 Elvington Road, Hightown, Liverpool L38 9AN.
