Shots legends raise £5,000 for hospice

Twenty-six Aldershot FC and Aldershot Town legends helped to raise over £5,000 for the Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice last month at `To Make A Dream Survive` – The Event organised by the club’s co-founder, Graham Brookland.

A host of former players and managers were amongst almost 200 people at the Potters International Hotel to celebrate the Club’s long-standing association with the Hospice

Attendees included Keith Baker, Neil Baker, Darren Barnard, Barry Blankley, George Borg, Murray Brodie, Terry Brown, Nikki Bull, Glen Burvill, Mark Butler, Stuart Cash, Jason Chewins, Colin Fielder, John Grant, Ben Herd, Joe Jopling, Tony Lange, Martin Kuhl, Alex McGregor, Andy Nunn, Terry Owens, Karl Prentice, Paul Priddy, Tim Sills, Steve Stairs, Jimmy Sugrue, Stuart Udal and Gary Waddock. Chairman Shahid Azeem, manager Barry Smith and striker Richard Brodie were also present.

The event was inspired by Graham Brookland’s book, To Make A Dream Survive, published earlier this year, which tells the story of his 40 year association with the clubs. It was sponsored by Eagle Radio, Branston Adams and Scott 2 Go.

A montage of photographs and newspaper cuttings covering the final days of Aldershot FC in March 1992 was presented to the Club by Graham, and is now on display in the Phoenix Lounge.

Auction items included Darren Jones’ match-worn shirt, from the 2011 Carling Cup tie versus Manchester United which had been signed by the United squad, plus an original framed article from the Aldershot News and Chronicle of 1930.

The Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice is the only adult Hospice caring for terminally ill people and their families across the whole of West Surrey and part of North East Hampshire. It serves over half a million residents, providing Specialist Palliative Care to adult patients and their families affected by a terminal illness, such as cancer, heart, lung or neurological disease.

Every day, it supports over 140 patients and their families, either at home, in the community or at the Hospice. Central funding covers less than 15% of the Hospice’s costs, meaning that it needs to raise over £15,000 each day to maintain its exceptional levels of clinical care and support.
