Approx. 70 (I am sure something official will be listed in the fullness of time) Regrettably not one to live very long in the memory, although the hosts will no doubt think otherwise claiming their second win in this seasons Vase competition over one level above SML Premier and their second via penalties. There was not a huge amount between the teams who as expected put in huge amounts of effort but neither team could frequently penetrate two reasonably well organised defences. Initially, I thought that Colney Heath were the better team as the pace of Dominic Knaggs on the right was causing difficulties for the home defence. One run saw him run positively forward but the angle was against him and all he could do was to shoot into the side netting. His second run saw a well directed low cross which was missed by Reece Latimer landing at the feet of Kamel El-Maghur, however he did not get a particularly firm connection on the shot which ended up being a reasonably straightforward gather for Jack Riddell. The visitors early threat diminished when Knaggs went off injured after twenty five minutes and for the remainder of the half the pendulum swung very much into the direction of M&B. They took the lead when Abraham Lamina drove in a shot from the edge of the area after a move that had been initially started by Lamina had ended with a shot through a crowd of players from Tolduwa Dada which was cleared off the line by Bradley Dixon-Smith but this had only travelled out as far as the lurking Lamina. The problem though for the remainder of the half and for the majority of the second half, M&B rarely looked like expanding their advantage. Even though their pursuit of a second goal was easily dealt with by the Colney Heath defence, the M&B defence was only occasionally threatened by a visiting attack that threatened in accordance with a 22.-3 scoring record of 6 goals in 9 games thus far. A free kick which took an eternity to take and which was struck rather meekly straight into the wall by El-Maghur was the sum total of the threat from the visitors in the opening minutes of the second half. However, as the second half progressed the visitors started to pose more of a danger to the M&B defence. They were unfortunate not to level where after a close range header from El-Maghur which could only be parried by Riddell, the rebound was shot straight at the M&B keeper. In the end persistence gained a leveller for the visitors as an inswinging corner from Bradley Dixon-Smith was met by a soaring leap by Yasin Boodhoo and his header found the net past Riddell's right hand side. With little separating the two teams, there was little hope that penalties would be avoided, though a fierce drive from Tejon Brown just cleared the M&B bar. There was to conclude an out of keeping with the remainder of the contest melee which led to players from far and wide intervening but like the game itself ended up being rather subdued with little more than posturing, jostling and two yellow cards for the main protagonists. Out of the penalties taken M&B converted all four that they took, however firstly Harry Shepherd placed his penalty far too close to Riddell who saved relatively easily and Hadley Gleeson sent the visitors fourth penalty wide of the far post. There will be more than a hint of coincidence if in the next round M&B draw one of the remaining SML Premier Division teams at home, match almost inevitably then is played on a Friday and Sunday and the hosts win through on penalties after a drawn outcome. The step counter ticked over on the outward journey, however with an 8,00 kick off and the contest finishing at 22.05 due to penalties, a scheduled Ensign 77A service was perfectly timed though took rather a lot longer than expected picking up many fares along the way from late finishing workers from Lakeside. Indoors at 23.07.
