SHEPSHED DYNAMO 2 vs WILLENHALL TOWN 3

Willenhall renewed their rivalry with the Midland Football Alliance Champions of the 1995/96 season with their first ever Unibond away match and in the process got their first ever Unibond win!

Dynamo put their stall out from the off, playing the long ball game and using the off side trap to defend, which frustrated the visitors as much as the 175 strong crowd.

Their tactics paid off when they took the lead on 13 minutes, a long ball over the defence found Henson who unleashed an unstoppable, swerving shot past Vaughan.

The Reds struggling to play their usual passing style of football on the narrow pitch and were restricted to trying the up and over approach.

Some quick thinking by keeper Vaughan on 24 minutes paid off when he spotted the Shepshed defence on the half way line and his opposite number Keeling off his line, Vaughan’s long kick was collected by Tyrell and his pace left the defence standing, before he lobbed the stranded keeper to level the score.

The visitors joy was short lived when three minutes later a free kick found a totally unmarked Lambert and with acres of space and oceans of time his powerful header beat Vaughan.

With half time approaching Tyrell saw his 35-yard volley graze the wrong side of the top of the Shepshed net on 36 minutes, before three minutes later Swann blasted an equaliser following another long ball from Vaughan.

Two second half changes saw the return Quilt for Tyrell and Curran on for Colcombe, the Reds reverted to five at the back and tried to play the ball up, which saw them gain the upper hand. Keeper Keeling tipped over a Whitcombe 35-yard volley on 55 minutes, before super sub Quilt snatched his first goal of the campaign. With 67 minutes on the clock a through ball saw Quilt jump head and shoulders above the defence to head home the winner.

However, soon after Quilt limped off injured following a challenge and was replaced by Jackson.

Reds line up; Vaughan, Colwell, Whitcombe, Thomas, Slater, Myers, Smith, Swann, Tyrell, Edwards, Colcombe. Subs Quilt, Curran, & Jackson.

The Reds are at home on Bank Holiday Monday when Spalding are the visitors for a 3pm kick off.

Saturday 4th September the Reds are in FA Cup action when they visit Eastwood Town, before they entertain Gresley Rovers at Noose Lane on Tuesday 7th Sept.
