Birmingham Senior Cup Round 2

SUTTON COLDFIELD TOWN 1 vs WILLENHALL TOWN 0

When two high flying clubs from different leagues clash you can expect a close and explosive match and all the players duly delivered in this 2nd Round clash. Sutton from the Dr Martens and Willenhall from the Midland Football Alliance served up a tough tackling (but never malicious) game of football on an anything but perfect playing surface. The teams were aided by a ref who for a change who wasn't whistle happy and allowed the players to battle for the ball, much to the enjoyment of the crowd.

The Reds made several changes from their regular line up, giving the rest of the squad an outing while resting several injured players.

The evenly matched teams appeared to cancel each other out and the first half didn't have many on goal chances. The Reds closest chance came on 19 minutes when Price's 20 yard effort went just wide.

The Blues only real chance came on 45 minutes and resulted in their only goal of the game. The ref spotted a Red hand touch the ball and from the resulting penalty, keeper Vaughan got a hand to Tucker's low spot kick but wasn't able to prevent it reaching the back of the net.

The second period started as the first half had ended with the Royals pressing for a second. The Reds defence stood firm and on 70 minutes a double substitution by the visitors gave them the upper hand, unfortunately no more goals could be mustered.

Sutton will be hoping for a plum tie in the Third Round with Walsall, WBA. Wolves and Birmingham entering the draw.

Willenhall will be looking to make progress in the League Cup on Saturday when they visit Studley. The Reds still have the tasty Vase trip to Gazza's Morpeth Town (a supporters coach is currently being arranged call the club for details 01902 636586 ).
