Retford United have held an emergency meeting this week in their first steps to stabilise the club after a dramatic few days at the Jones

Birmingham City manager Gary Rowett has revealed his admiration for Halifax Town defender Marc Roberts.

The 24-year-old has been linked with a move to Blues and Rowett admits he is a player whose career path he has followed for a long time.

"I remember watching him at Buxton when he was 19-years-old," Rowett said.

"I have watched him for three, four, five years now on and off and he's a player I think has progressed really, really well.

"He's played for the England C team and he's a player that perhaps long term he would be one you would look at at having potential after a period of time to play at this level.

"But he's obviously Halifax's player, that's as far as I can say.

"But in terms of do I quite like him as a player? Yes I do, he's a bit of an old-fashioned centre back.

"There's not too many of those around.

"I am also aware it's a big gulf between the Conference and the Championship."

Former Crystal Palace trialist Roberts joined Halifax from Northern League Premier Division side Buxton in the summer of 2013.

He has made 29 appearances so far this term for a side that sits just outside the play-offs.
