Glorious weather and a football match at home to a good quality team does football get any better than this? Town were under pressure most of the first half Chelmsford looking good going forward.
JJ saved. Paul Campbell was at his very best tackling back and clearing. Rudi Hall shot wide. James Dickie shot wide. JJ saved. Bryan Hammatt went in on a 50:50 ball with the Keeper Richard McKinney who saved well. At the other end the much light heartedly abused Lee Protheroe had a shot saved by JJ. Simon Tickner headed wide. JJ forced to save free kick. Chelmsford looked to take free kicks quickly. At the other end Ozie was brought down. A resultant Rudi hall free kick was headed clear. Simon Tickner took a ball off an attackers feet beautifully and cleared. JJ at his athletic best to dive and ensure a ball went round his post. Town were beginning to flag and gifted Chelmsford a golden opportunity to score but the failed to take it. Chelmsford headed over. Lee Protheroe shot wide again. Simon Tickner was beaten by a striker who then failed to pull it back into the path of a striker. What a golden chance gone begging. James Dickie was skinned oops offside. A number of Offsides to both teams. Finally on 45 minutes Jon Keeling ran on to a perfectly weighted pass to slot past JJ 0 – 1. We weren’t disgraced in the first half but we dwelt on the ball too much.
Second half Jonah on for Velandia and time for Town to wake up. Campbell shot over. Chelmsford in a one on one in our box and fall but no penalty. Paul; Campbell running at defenders gets to the by-line to be brought down. Penalty no question. Rudi despatched it but McKinney still got a hand to it. 1 – 1. Town in good control and starting to worry Chelmsford. Jonah shot wide. JJ saved. Kofi Nyamah shot wide on the half volley. Richard Holmes of Chelmsford goes down in pain with no one near him. Simon Tickner header not quite angled enough. Some lovely skill from Glen Harvey. Lovely threaded pass by Hammatt that Ozie Foster just failed to connect with James Dickie saved. Town had played well and were well on top in the second half but with changes and the heat were beginning to flag. JJ forced into a double save.
In the 78th minute a clinical breakaway finish from Jason Hallett was good enough to score the second for Chelmsford score well again. On 81 minutes Paul Johnson scored again from the penalty spot for Chelmsford. 1 – 3. Town were now playing for pride. JJ saved again. Finally Rudi Hall threaded a great through ball for Bryan Hammatt to dispatch past McKinney on the turn and without thinking. Nice goal Bryan. 2 – 3.
