Merstham 2-2 VT

Merstham very nearly gave this game away at a freezing cold Moatside today.The game started off being very scrappy with neither side putting their foot on the ball,and VT more than happy to clear their lines by hoofing the ball up field.Then after five minutes ,a slip at the back allowed a VT forward in and having beaten the keeper to the ball rounded a defender and rifled the ball into the top corner of the net.This knocked the stuffing out of Merstham and they failed to get their game going.Worse was to follow when Chatsfield gave away a penalty which was duly converted.Two nil down at half time seemed harsh because VT had only two attempts at goal,but Merstham created very little despite having most of the posession.The second half start at a higher tempo as Merstham tried to get a foothold on the game and Greenhouse who was brought on for Rhod Davies in the first half, started to make them tick.Merstham scored midway through the second half when a goalmouth scramble resulted with the ball being stabbed home from short range.With their tails up Merstham went at VT and it was no surprise when they equalised with a back header from Agei that looped over the keeper and went in off of the underside of the bar.Instead of going all out for the winner Merstham seemed to take their foot off the gas and the game went into extra time.Extra was pretty uneventful and although Merstham had the majority of the ball they did not create much and the game fizzled out to a draw.All in all Merstham deserved at least a draw, but will consider themselves lucky to have gifted their oponents a two goal lead and still stay the cup
