Denny King Memorial Cup Final

For the second season in a row a Senior Division Three side beat a Premier Division team when Castle United ran out 4 – 3 winners against M & B Club in a thrilling match in front of a crowd of over 100 people.

The first half was a very even affair with both attacks failing to breach solid defences. The only chance of note came after 35 minutes when a Castle header struck the cross-bar.

The game sprang into life on 58 minutes when, following a foul by the goal-keeper just outside the left hand corner of the penalty area, Joshua Willard slotted the free-kick through a massed penalty area directly into the corner of the net to give Castle United a 1 – 0 lead.

This brought a flurry of attacks by M & B Club resulting in a header from a free-kick striking the cross bar after 66 minutes and a shot from outside the box striking the post two minutes later.

After withstanding constant M & B pressure, Courtney White broke down the left hand side of the pitch for Castle and was fouled in the penalty area. The resultant penalty, that White took himself, was brilliantly saved by the M & B goalkeeper,

The game continued to flow from end to end until the 83rd minute when a cross from the right to the centre of the box was powered underneath the goalkeeper from 18 yards by Chris Rowlett to give Castle a 2 – 0 lead that appeared to have settled the match.

M & B Club were not to be denied and on 88 minutes a free kick from the left was headed home by Nick Reynolds to make the score 2 – 1. With injury time looming and after constant pressure, M & B were awarded a corner that was floated into the box and headed home by Steve Brown to make the score 2 – 2.

Four minutes into injury time a close range shot was somehow cleared off the line by a Castle defender and soon afterwards the whistle went to send the match into extra time.

Just two minutes into the first period of extra time, a cross was picked up on the right hand edge of the penalty area by Dan Lakha-Heron who shot across the keeper into the corner of the net to put Castle back in the lead. Just one minute later M & B Club almost drew level when a header once again struck the woodwork.

On 98 minutes, after Courtney White had been brought down once again in the area, captain Josh Willard stepped up and slotted the ball past the keeper to put his side 4 – 2 up.

M & B Club fought tenaciously and on 119 minutes were themselves awarded a penalty that Nick Reynolds scored to put his side only one goal away from a penalty shoot out. Three minutes later the final whistle went on a thoroughly entertaining match with the final score 4 – 3 to Castle United.

The trophy and medals were present by members of the King family who named Castle United's Bradley O'Donovan man of the match.

Congrats to Castle Utd. Will you be in the Olympian League again next season and have you found an alternative ground?

ProKit UK Essex Olympian Football League

Denny King Memorial Cup Final

Castle United 4 M & B Club 3

At AFC Hornchurch

Admission £3 (including programme)

After a reallly dull first half (in whichthere were no goals) this match really livened up after the interval.

Castle Utd went into a two goal lead and looked to be cruising to victory. When it was 2-0 Castle were awarded a penalty, which was well saved. This seemed to give M & B a lifeline which they took full advantage of. Two goals in the last few minutes took the game into extra time. However, M & B couldn't maintain their momentum and it wasn't long before Castle Utd restored their two goal lead. Even though M & B scored a penalty in practically the last kick of the game, it was a deserved witn for Castle Utd.

Watched the match in the company of Matthew (his Dad Keith sat elsewhere), Brentwood Phil, Herb Alpert and Leyton Orient fan Dave. One downside of the night was the appearance in the second half of Fish (the local freeloaeder who would have come in furing the interval to avoid paying the massive £3 asked for admission) and I was hoping that it would be several weeks before I saw him again.

Im guessing this is a groundhoppers report, found it on another forum.

Nice to see them doing well. I had a few of the lads with me at Southill. Some very talented lads who should be playing higher up the pyramid.
