If not for visiting keeper James Pullen we could have been a couple of goals up within about 25 minutes. He saved well from Bertie Brayley in the 16th minute, pushing the ball wide after a quickly taken free-kick from John Martin found Mark Graham who centred for Brayley from the bye-line. A minute later he saved well again, this time holding on to a firm header from Ollie Adedeji following a John Martin corner. Then, in the 22nd minute, he tipped over a scorching 30 yard effort from Adam Locke. But then it all went wrong. Heybridge took the lead in the 26th minute. A free-kick from Stuart Williams looked to be comfortably held by Danny Gay, but he lost his grip on the ball and Carl Griffiths was on hand to slot the loose ball home. Vinnie John headed over when well placed from a far post John Martin free kick but Heybridge should have gone further ahead when Gay tipped away a hanging cross from under the crossbar but onto the head of Williams who somehow managed to head over.

Jon Keeling, Jamie Southon and Gary Abbott replaced Adam Locke, Vinnie John and Bertie Brayley at half time - a bold move - but Heybridge extended their lead on the hour. Again it was from a free-kick. Daniel Barber floated the ball into the penalty area where it was headed back across goal, eventually hit the far post and was put away by substitute Younes Tajer. Abbott skimmed the crossbar from a John Martin free kick 5 minutes later but Heybridge had only to get men behind the ball to render us largely ineffective. A little bit of inspiration from Lee Williams with 15 minutes to go gave him a chance from the edge of the area but Pullen was alert again and parried the shot clear. A final chance deep into injury time from Abbott, an 18 yard strike, drifted wide but it would only have been a consolation.

Line-up:- Gay, Gooding, Kerrigan, Adedeji, Williams, Locke (Keeling 45), Graham, Brayley (45), John (Southon 45), Douglas, J Martin. Subs not used:- R Martin, McCartney (GK).
