This was a far more competitive match than the season opener, with the home side treating it more like a cup tie. The result was a series of tackles which were much heavier than would normally be expected, but when Frankie Curley put in a couple of crunching tackles of his own, East Thurrock backed off somewhat.

In bright sunshine East Thurrock forced the pace, but the best they could achieve were two crosses, both of which were capably handled by Joe Woolley, and a series of centres from both wings, which Elliot Styles was very prominent in clearing.

Hornchurch had to wait until midway through the half before they threatened, and Leon McKenzie fired a hard shot just over the bar from Joe Anderson’s pass from the left wing.

Frankie Curley went close with a header from a Lewis Smith centre from the right, and when Curley chased a long ball through the middle, home keeper Dean Otley raced out of goal to grab the ball on the edge of the area.

A minute before half time Martin Tuohy was booked along with Simon Peddie.

Hornchurch kept the same line up for the start of the second half, and Lewis Smith almost opened the scoring with a hard shot from the right, which was turned high over his own crossbar by Spencer Harrison’s wild attempt to clear.

The only goal quickly followed when MARTIN TUOHY headed home from Andy Tomlinson’s corner.

And then it was time for a change, starting with Jon Hunt on 50 minutes, and ending when Hayes Thomas replaced Joe Anderson on 70 minutes. Styles and Woolley were the only Hornchurch players to play the full ninety minutes.

Jon Hunt almost added a second when he ran on to Smith’s through pass, but placed his shot a little too high as Otley rushed out to narrow the angle.

Fola Orilonishe and Tambeson Eyong both made good runs along their respective wings, and Hornchurch continued to dominate, though they survived a last minute attempt which saw the ball driven inches over the bar.
