SCOTS HOLIDAYMAKERS STRANDED AFTER WALKOUT Tears as trip to see Pope is scrapped

MORE than 40 worshippers on their way to Rome to meet the Pope were among the hundreds stranded at Scots airports yesterday.

The party of 43 from St Flannan's Church, in Kirkintilloch, were meant to meet the Pontiff on Tuesday in his Castel Gandolfo residence.

But they were forced to cancel the trip after being stranded in the departure lounge at Glasgow.

Father John Conway said: "British Airways have told us that even on Monday it will be impossible for us to get a flight.

"Alternative flights from Amsterdam, Paris, and so on, are all completely booked up.

"So we have been left with no alternative but to cancel the trip. It is so disappointing for everyone."

Among those who had hoped to see his Holiness were Hugh and Elizabeth Docherty, 52, who like the rest of the party had saved up £700 each for the trip.

Hugh, 55, said: "We have just been told that the Heathrow staff have walked out again. So we might as well just go home."

does beg the question...
