Glad to help Adrian !

Yes, you are quite correct saying that Pat Jennings was Northern Ireland's goalkeeper in the tournament.

Other home grown names you probably remember which are listed as being in the teams squads  are................

(according to the programme).

For England

Tommy Smith (Liverpool)

Ron Harris (Chelsea)

John Sissons (West Ham)

Jon Sammels (Arsenal)

Dave Sadler (Man Utd)

And for Scotland

George Graham (with Aston Villa then)

and Peter Lorimer (Leeds ).

I'm sure all the old crumbles remember the lot I certainly do!

Hi Adrian.

It was in the 1963 UEFA Under-18 European  Youth Tournament, which was held in England  partly to celebrate the English F.A.'s centenary that year.

There were 4 groups each containing 4 teams, the winners of each group progressing to the semi-finals.

The game held at the Dolphin was Greece v West Germany on the 13th April 1963, a group A match.

Greece won 7-2, in front of a 2,000 crowd !

I knew for sure that the famous German player Gunter Netzer played in this game at the Dolphin, and assumed when I saw your question that Franz B. had too.

Looking at my copy of the programme for that Tournament, Franz B isn't listed in the German squad of 17.

However, he could well have played as there was a bit of controversy over Franz at this time.

According to Wikipedia, apparently aged 18 in 1963, he had made a girl pregnant and refused to marry her, so because of this he had been banned from the German youth team by the German F.A., but was re-admitted back into the team after the intervention of the German youth team boss, Dettmar Cramer.

Official records seem to state that Beckenbauer was banned for all of 1963 & didn’t play for the West Germany youth team until 1964….. but do we have any older fans who were among the 2,000 fans at The Dolphin that are adamant Beckenbauer did play?

I was at the game  At the end  a group of Greek players gave one particular stroppy  player a hard time and a fellow spectator  said it was Beckenbauer but that's just hearsayand no kind of proof Holyport Rebels excellent research does suggest that his official sanction may have been overturned perhaps someone else can help.

I admit to being a football fact/trivia devouring nerd, so I was very eager to find out if one of the greatest players of all time actually played on Slough Town's pitch.
I think I've been able to find out if he did or not.
I've found a website that has lots of details about this 1963 competition.
I have no idea how accurate it is, but from what I can see it looks pretty good to me.
Hopefully the link to this site is at the end of this post.
It names almost all  the team line-ups that took part in this tournament.
For the match at the Dolphin, the German team does not include Franz B.
In fact the German team line up from 1 -11 for the match v Greece matches exactly as the Tournament programme has them listed.
In their other two games the German team does change, but every player that plays is listed in the German team squad in the programme.
Curtis posted that Franz was banned from the youth team in '63 and didn't play for them until I guess he was allowed back in '64, and from what I can see  that looks accurate.
Sadly, it looks to me as though Franz didn't play in that match at the Dolphin.
( Unless someone has more evidence that shows otherwise.)
It would have been great to be able to say that he had.
So, despite his stellar footballing career when he won a World Cup winners medal as a player AND as a manager , a European Championship winning medal, 3x European Cup winners medals and was 2x European footballer of the year, Franz was not able to add to his massive list of achievements the ultimate honour of having played on the hallowed turf of Slough Town F.C.
I hope she was worth it Franz !
You should have kept it in your trousers !
( or should that be Lederhosen ?)
I suggest the best trivia detail we can take from this episode, is that there is a player who has won a World Cup winners medal AND a European Championship winners medal, who has played  in a official, competitive match  at the home of Slough Town.
Gunter Netzer.

Underneath I have firstly attached the relevant page from the website, showing the German line-ups in their 3 matches.

Then there is a photo of the German team squad from the Tournament programme, and lastly is the link to the website with further details of other matches in the competition.

Yep, I'm proud to be a football nerd !😄 :thumbsup(2):

Thanks for that Holyport Rebel bit of a shame really but how many people knew an international game took place on Sloughs pitch!

Amateur international at the old Dolphin Stadium

probably the wettest rain   soaked game I`ve watched. would never get played today.

I would have gone to that game if I hadn't been waiting in vain at the FE College bus stop for a young woman from my brother's office in High Wycombe who had agreed to come with me to watch the match. She never materialised but claimed later, in correspondence, that she had. Taught me a cruel but essential lesson in life-never trust a Wycombe Wanderers' supporter.

A kinder response than one from a mate-"She saw you and stayed on the bus!"
